Description
Two cars sped along the highway, each on the other side of a brick wall, both blissfully unaware of the other. On the left was an silver Maserati Gran Turicmo, the right, a red Ford F-150. The pickup got off, the only exit that would get the two inhabitants to the younger ones school. As they got to the stop light, a silver blur was seen in the rear view mirror. All the younger knew before all was black, was that her Mother was over her before she knew what was going on. Never feeling the impact may have been a blessing or curse.
__
The young girl awoke, no older than 15, in a strange room. She swiftly realized that this was not her room, and jumped from the bed she was laying in. Rocking on her heals, she looked to inspect her clothes for damage, but could not remember dressing in such a nightgown for bed last night. She tried to remember anything of the night, but was startled when she could not recall her name or where she had come from.
She closed her eyes and concentrated but was only met with a flicker of an image of a man, who had brilliant red hair and striking blue eyes. She vaguely recalled he was her older brother, but she decided this information was not enough, and tried again. Alas, she was once again met with a memory, only it was a woman. She had the same amazing red hair as the man, her brother she reminded herself, only her eyes were a chocolate brown.
She released a breath she had not been aware she was holding and sat down on the bed, and looked around. Only a small room was off to the side, no light was on but she could already tell it was a bathroom. In addition to the bed, the only furniture there was a chair and a small table, bare of anything. She saw on the wall a mirror, glowering, she, wanted, no, needed, to know why she was here, as if the mirror would help.
She got up and went over, tucking a piece behind her ear and dimly recognized the fiery red hair her brother and, mother, had. Before she was aware, she was sucked into the mirror and opened her mouth to scream before she landed, none to gracefully, into a pile of fresh snow.
She tried to scream and ask where she was and why they had done this to her. Was she just not in that small apartment room, where it was warm and safe? But as she asked herself this, no sound around her changed. But her mouth was still open and she was straining to make a sound. She hurriedly closed her mouth and stood, shivering a bit in her thin nightgown.
At the top of the hill, she saw a log cabin, smoke coming out of the chimney and the roof was covered in glistening snow. She could see a flicker of a candle in the window, the only light in the snowy winter night.
Trudging her way up the path, her goal was reached when she softly knocked on the door. Her answer was only the feel of the wind, twirling her in a fit of pure white flakes. She cautiously turned the knob, opening it wide enough for her to fit through.
Looking around the cabin, it looked abandoned, the green couch had rips and tears and the kitchen was a complete mess. She heard a rustling beside her and turned quickly to become face to face with a man.
He had bright green eyes, staring curiously at her, titling his head causing his blond hair to cover his left side of his face.
They stared for what felt like an eternity, silence threatening to engulf them whole. She knew if she even tried to talk, nothing would come out. But he tried, and try so hard he did, to speak, and all that came out was air.
No sound. It was at that moment that she realized she was in a world of silence, and nothing could reach beyond the threshold. He stared pleadingly at her, as if she held the key to music that just could no longer play.
She stepped back lightly and suddenly was being thrown down into a black abyss, her silent scream abruptly ringing to loud in her own ears. As she continued to drift in the black hollow, she heard music. Nothing loud and annoying as she heard from her brothers room each day, but instead soft and melodious. Something her mother would show her in her own music box.
She was set down, much gentler this time, onto grass on a hill, looking much like the one the cabin was placed. But their were no trees like the forest surrounding the log cabin, only a grassland, swaying in the wind. She decided to walk to the top of the hill, and find the music.
She was greeted with a young woman, and a baby in her arms, sitting on a bench at the peak. She was confused for it was a younger, much younger, version of her mother, humming along to the music playing. She opened her mouth to ask who she was, and stopped when the woman turned to look at her smiling softly.
"You must go back, Isabella. Your job is not done yet in the world of the living" the woman said, tenderly cradling the baby against her. Looking back up she looked like she was glowing, "Leah and Alexander need you now more than ever. Think of how devastated your brother would be if his baby sister never came home. My job is done, you are in charge of your life, not yet can you take responsibility for your destiny"
Isabella was her name, she blinked softly and nodded, the image of her mother fading in front of her eyes. She reached out to grab them, but fell onto her knees and started crying softly. She slammed her fist into the ground and let out a strangled cry. She felt the ground opening and swallowing her, but all she wanted to do was cry. She needed to be strong, but why couldn't she stop screaming?
__
Isabella became aware that someone was talking to her and holding her hand before she was coherent enough to realize who. The voice was deep, but was oh so familiar.
"Come on Bella, you need to wake up. I know if you can scream and thrash around enough to hit two doctors in the face, you can open your eyes" the voice said.
She snorted at how stupid Alex was when he was worried. He was known for making dumb remarks when he was scared. She heard him take a sharp intake of breath and asked slowly, "Bella? You awake now?"
She managed to croak out, "You say the stupidest things when something freaks you"
She opened her eyes and smirked, or tried to, at Alex's face. He looked so relieved and for a split second, was glad that he decided to skip school to make sure she was okay. Then he groaned when he realized that he was definitely was getting in-school suspension for ditching.
