I don't know why it's taken me so long but I'm finally updating all of my sprite sheets from Global Game Jam! What is GGJ, you ask? It's a yearly event all around the world where people get together and brainstorm, plan, and overall create an entire game in less than 48 hours! Sounds crazy, and it is. It is fueled by caffeine and a lack of sleeping and general insanity. This sheet is the second Game Jam in September '09! If you think in the implications of "annual event" you'll realize that means that this was not an official Game Jam. Our school liked it so much we decided to host our own one in the fall! The theme? "None Shall Pass" Also it had to incorporate the word "Glacial."
The thought process:
Okay so you're a viking (we had already planned that much before hearing the theme), and you live in a glacier. Then one day a wizard on vacation kicks you out of your home and you land halfway across the world. So you have to DESTROY EVERYTHING ON YOUR WAY HOME. Also you were drinking hot cocoa at the time so whenever you see it, it brings back bad memories and you FLY INTO A RAGE AND EVERY BUTTON ON THE KEYBOARD IS AN ATTACK BUTTON YEAH.
Cue Raging Axe B4$t4rd V: the cocoa chronicles. Why the "5"? Because sequels sell better, and--you've already heard this.
You start with a club. You knock down houses, peasants, EVERYTHING. You get cool stuff from the rubble of the houses. But the guards tend to be pretty tough to kill unless you get an axe.
This was a massive step up from our previous game, artistically. It's set outside as opposed to inside the hull of a ship, and is a lot more colorful. I set to work spriting the viking first as our programmer got to work on the particle effects. We lol'd way too hard the first time we saw the pixel art blood fly from a peasant.
We didn't finish nearly as much of this game as we intended. We planned on multiple levels (including a forest, cave, and snowy mountain), bosses (such as a werewolf and a dragon), and the final showdown with the tropical t-shirt-clad wizard himself. Still, it's a lot nicer looking than Narwhal 2 and had a neat item upgrade system. Personally, I blame Scribblenauts for our general lack of accomplishments. And a little bit of DBZ abridged. xP
(Unfortunately, I don't have a download link for this game! It wasn't a Global Game Jam, so there was no site for us to host our awesome platformer hack-n-slash. >:
