Description
Name:This creature holds many names across the Wasteland, but it is commonly called a 'Roc' on the eastern coast.
Evolved From:
Eagle; there are variants evolving from bald, golden, and steller's sea eagles in addition to many other birds of prey. Eagles seem to have been the ones most commonly subjected to mutation, however.
Average Height:
~8-9 ft, with a wingspan of 26-30 ft.
Average Lifespan:
50 years, if they aren't killed prematurely.
Damage:
While not as nearly as irradiated as a lot of the other dangerous wasteland creatures, the Roc still has many reasons to be feared. Massive, sharp talons can kill anyone in seconds and the beak is adept at tearing away flesh.
Resistances:
Radiation
Diet:
Carnivorous; eats both red meat and fish.
In a cruel twist of irony, the creature that was once a representation of freedom in the pre-war nation is now one of the most dangerous creatures anybody could happen to come across in the Wasteland. With the pressures of many of its prey items growing, the Eagle had to evolve just as well; and the result ended up being a massive bird of prey that will sink its talons into anything it can lift... including humans.
Its body is so large that the Roc can only fly for short periods at a time, but nonetheless this fact is still one of its most valuable assets. Their massive wingspan casts a shadow large enough to strike fear into the hearts of even the fiercest ground-dwelling beasts of the wastes.
Brahmin and Radstags are common choices of prey for the Roc, but it's not uncommon for them to go after humanoids when they're presented with the chance. There have also been accounts of them attacking Vertibirds, though these events are usually few and far between and result in the deaths of both parties.
The Roc is both a creature feared and sought after. Those who somehow manage to bring down this creature not only get the pride in slaying such a beast, but the Roc's wickedly sharp talons also are often also used in making knives, whips, or are installed into power fists to make very effecient and very deadly weapons.
There are also rumors about people managing to tame and ride Rocs, however this has been widely disputed by the fact that any and all attempts to pacify or mount such a bird ended up resulting in the horrific death of anybody stupid enough to try.
A good way to ensure survival against the Roc is to immediately seek shelter and hope it flies off in search of easier prey.
