Description
Introduction: The act of introducing or the state of being introduced.I'm Jessie and my favourite flower is the lily. :]
I'm really proud of this. It's the first real piece I've ever done completely in pen and I think it looks pretty good. The bottom-most petal is my favourite.
Used this as a reference. Thank you.
Comments and critique are greatly appreciated. Point out my flaws, make me better. :]
This is the first piece of the one hundred theme challenge. I am doing variation one. I plan on doing all of them in pen but who knows.
I give full permission for *100ThemesChallenge to display this in their gallery.
Please leave a comment if you favourite. :]

That's absolutely beautiful. You're a very talented artist, and I love your portraits. (:
I wish I could draw like that. Even after years of classes and just plain practice, my art looks like I drew it in the dark, with a blindfold on sometimes. xD

Thank you very much.
And don't be so hard on yourself. It just takes time. Just a couple years ago I was drawing people completely out of proportion and without shading. It's funny to look back at some of my old work.

You're welcome.
I know. It must be taking a long time for me, haha. Really? Yeah, it is sometimes funny to look back on old work and see how we used to see things. I remember a couple months ago, I saw a drawing that I had made way back when I was around 6, I think. It was some type of dinosaur, with blue hair, and a bright orange tutu. It was so weird, but so funny at the same time.

Beautiful drawing. I especially like how you tilted the flower. I love flowers so I especially like this drawing

I like the heavy directional stroking you use. It gives your drawings a very strong sense of depth and shape.

Nice smooth lines and great attention to light
The center petal is a little chunky with the shading, but everything else looks fantastic

Thank you. :]
If you're talking about the bottom-center petal, I think that's because it was the first one I did and my pen worked properly. Or if you're talking about the top-center petal, I think it's because that was the last one and my pen was dying like crazy, haha.

Aha. Yeah I was talking about the top center one looking a little chunky. The bottom one looks great.
It's still good for pen. I could never work in pen.. I make to many mistakes.

Haha, I've never worked in pen, either. But it's actually really good to use. It makes you not want to make mistakes, so it results in less of them. :]

Haha.. hmmm, too bad I don't TRY to make mistakes. So I'm not sure if that method would work for me. I almost thinking about trying it though =]

Haha. I don't either. But with like, pencil, you can make mistakes and erase them. Not so much with penn, haha.

Haha. I like how many times we've started off by saying "haha"
Anywayy.
I think not having the ability to fix my mistakes would make me make more, not less... and I can't resist putting another "haha" at the end of that

Gigglegiggle. There, a little variation. : D
Well, the pen just made me concentrate more and think about where I was putting my lines. But I'm sure it's not the same with other people, haha. But I think that since this piece was so loose and there was room for error that it came out better than if I was doing something like a human face.

Haha -has no originality-
Yeah I guess the subject does make a difference. How did you do the shading on this? Did you use just one color pen? Cause it looks greyish in some places.. or did you just go crazy making the dark spots dark? Haha -clutches blending stomps and tortillons- I [need] my pencils for blending. That's another problem I'd have :]

chiosxe In reply to wildthinginyourdream [2008-08-05 02:36:55 +0000 UTC]
Nope, just one pen. I just used a bajillion straight / curved lines and some crosshatch in a few places. One different sections, I pressed harder or light to get the right shade, but it was mostly just a case of the density of the lines.
I wish the other petals looked like the bottom one, though. That left one is pretty light, haha.

Just like.. a regular BIC pen?
OR a fancy art pen?
Yeah I like the bottom one, and that top-right-diagonal-folded one...
DO YOU SEE WHICH ONE I'M TALKING ABOUT?
The other ones still look good too.

I think it's Papermate, haha. I wish I had a fancy art pen. That would be cool.
I loveee that one, too. : D

Great detail on this! Maybe you could scan it again and crop out the notebook spiral so it has a bigger impact in a thumbnail image. Good job noticing the highlights and shadows of the petals - if you dramatized them even more I think that would improve the drawing too.
Overall it is a great sketch - if you want more critique, check the "Encourage Advanced Critique" option when submitting the deviation and more people will tear it apart! Hope it does not offend you, you have a lot of talent.

Thanks so much. It's nice to get some actual critique on my artwork, haha.
I've tried scanning pieces before and they usually don't turn out as well as a photograph. This picture is a lot lighter than the actual piece, so it is more dramatized in real life. And about the cropping, I was being much too lazy when uploading it, haha. I'll fix it up later.
Thanks again. :]
