Description The Legendary Ladder is a renowned structure built by a race of aliens to take advantage of their close proximity to a neighbouring and tidally-locked fertile moon. The Legendary Ladder serves as a colossal elevator between both worlds complete with a stop-off station at the near-halfway point where the gravity of both worlds is in tie with each other. It is used for both practical and leisure purposes and is the central hub of huge cities at both ends

My sole entry to TheLuminarium 's 10th online exhibit and the last "themed" one to my knowledge, given the theme Legendary. As most think of the past when they think of Legends, I deliberately went the other way and thought towards the future.
Creating buildings and spaceships often feels like such a chore to me, regardless of whether I do them in 2D or 3D (much of it was 3D though) I have no idea how other space artists handle them so well so this is a little unusual for me. Was hard trying to get a good composition and angle too, even now - I had to "fake" the perspective to an almost fisheye-like view to be able to get the whole structure in view to appreciate its length, which almost disappears into a hairline on the other end

Made using Cinema 4D, Vue 7 and Photoshop, oh, I'm aware the copyright says it was made a few months earlier than the submission date...that's because it was and I had to hold it for a while.

Edit: Wooo! the first time one of my sci-fi themed deviations gets a DD, it is after all one of my favourite things to do! Thanks a lot to *hoevelkamp and ^taenaron , both quality sci-fi/space artists in themselves

Lol, I don't think I'll be adding abother to this...took way long as it was I guess the tower would just be a total wreck, falling peices of metal everywhere and lots of explosions on the grounds of both planets

Hey! You've been featured in the Deep SPACE Blog - Issue #6 . Thanks for making such extraordinary pieces of art!

(yes, this is a mass message - so shoot me! It's still a freggin' good journal entry, and you're in it!)

Yeah Matt, you earned the DD on this one.
Of all the nice aspects of this piece, it's the perspective of the 3 planets that I feel really makes it work and pulled it all together.

An ol art teacher told me once, "Try to get your work to move off the page in order to cause the viewers eyes to wonder off the page, thus creating a curiousness about whats NOT in the image."

Thats what makes this work so well.

Thanksyou I remember being told a similar lesson too, and that was to try not to "squash" part of something just to get to fit it in frame (like part of a persons body etc) since its just plain better to let parts of something flow off the page which suggests theres more

Thanks for faving too

No wonder this got a DD, this is incredible! Mind that could be said about all of your works, they're all equally as deserving.
The structures of the city and the spaceships soaring around really give this image life, and I love the balance between the city and the planet. No one but you could pull off something as amazing as this, very well done indeed ^^.

Very great work here man! The 'space elevator' is actually a very real theory, with the elevator structure being composed of a new material called 'carbon nanotubes' I believe. I saw some documentary on it. Anyways you did a wonderful job

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to Novacron [2010-05-31 03:15:20 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou, I remember hearing about that a few years ago too, it's a real theory but not a real structure itself just yet It probably has influenced this in some way, mines just a souped up version

Greetings Matthew,

Suberb image, marvelous concept . . . One of your best space/SF related works. Although you say it feels like a chore for you to create structures and spacehips, one would not detect the same for this piece certianly looks like you were very much in touch and at ease with such artifacts. You most certainly earned the daily deviation for this one.

Regards,
Michael C. Turner

Thankyou, well I guess it's good that many believe that this makes me look like I've been doing this stuff all along, but I still havn't, but I guess if I did more I'd learn to make it a bit less tedious just like with anything else but like you, I still find more interest in the natural events taking place on a sci-fi world than the tech-related ones, which I guess make us a humble minority - as futuristic buildings and spaceships seem to dominate the genre but they're cool too

Thanks for the faves again too
