Description It doesn't matter what time you got to or what setting you're in; if there is a settlement of any size, it's going to have guards. For the setting that is Advent From Elsewhere, the humble town guard and the common foot soldier, the ashigaru, are sort of one and the same.
During wartime, the core infantry that the ashigaru are will double as security and/or occupying enforcement for settlements nearby the army, especially where a fort of some kind is involved.
However, when peace time rolls around, the role of guard undergoes a massive change. Anyone still in this kind of role either didn't have a good enough skill set outside of service to get replacement employment, or didn't have enough of a skillset inside of service to be promoted to the next generation of samurai.
Otherwise, most people who would take up the role of town watch are a collection of volunteer civilians with simple bludgeons to keep the peace.
Pay attention to any province where the guards are outfitted like soldiers, rather than a bunch of random people with batons. They either have a lot of problems inside, or are about to demonstrate their peacekeeping outside...
