Description    After a long night of walking, Xeriah decided that her and her companions needed a rest. She found a cave large enough for all of them to sleep in, but Xan wasn't tired. He let the three young lions sleep while he went off to hunt, maybe he was trying to distract himself from thinking of the lion Xeriah had mentioned.
Xeriah's sleep was filled with screaming.
Xeriah took a step backward, "Y-you..."
"ME!"  he lunged at her. Xan leaped onto his back before he reached the the three teens, his claws sinking into the pelt of the lion.
The three ran the rest of the length of the pass, stopping on the other side to look back. The lion smacked Xan with the back of one large forepaw, Xan staggered near the edge of the pass. "Oh, you're taking the fun out of this." he mocked as he shouldered Xan lightly, making him slip back. Xan dug his claws into the pass as he slid over the edge. The lion smirked, "You should've known better, boy." the taunted. "Now you're going to watch your beloved little things' agony as I rip them apart." he flexed his claws and looked back to the three.
Xan looked at the three, "RUN!" he roared.
The lion lunged at Xeriah- in that moment, both Dwala and Sciath had vanished- leaving her alone with him. Xan's voice rang out again and again until his words were overlapping and jumbleing together- "Run" and "Hurry" and "Get away"- swimming through Xeriah's now spinning head. Her eyes watered and she screamed out in fear and agony, "Xan, save me!"
Xeriah's eyes flew open wide- she looked around the cave to see it was empty. Where... her thoughts were cut short by the crack of a twig. Her head swung around, her eyes fell on paws- unnaturally large paws- marching past the small cave. Her wide eyes following the massive paws. She could barely believe that they blocked nearly the whole of the entrance.
Moments passed before she wriggled her way to opening to peak out. A huge near black lion was walking away from the cave, he hadn't noticed her scent. If he had, he didn't seem to care. She slowly slid out, her paws pushing the snapped twig and stirring the dawn silence into a disturbed eerie air. The lion paused, looked halfway over his shoulder, growled, and kept moving. Xeriah winced at his cold, red eyes.
Xeriah looked at the sky, gaging the direction of her own path. She looked back at the lion, he was headed toward the darker skies. She saw him look back again- was he concerned for her being alone? Or was it just to make sure she wasn't following him? Xeriah leaped up and had a look uncertain bravery as she looked at the lion. He stopped, "No." a strong voice boomed from the lion.
   Xeriah tilted her head.
"You can't go with me." he said, marching on. "I don't take kindly to cubs." he added before Xeriah could respond.
"I'm not a cub!" she said. "I was a trainee before-" Xeriah stopped herself. She looked down at her paws.
The lion marched on without asking her to continue. His large paws thudding in the dirt.
Xeriah followed anyway, "You headed for the darker lands?"
   The lion said nothing.
"I'm headed there too. Maybe we could-"
The lion turned on her and snapped, "Get. Away." he growled.
Xeriah stopped and blinked. The silence was piercing.
The lion looked into her eyes for the first time, he saw pain and regret, loneliness and strength. "What did you do?" he finally asked.
Xeriah sighed and looked down, "It wasn't me..." her eyes started to water. "It wasn't me!" she cried, looking up to the lion. "She looked like me, b-but she was older. I loved my grandfather! I would never kill him!"
   The lion's eyes widened, "Murder?"
   "No!"
"How long have you held that in, child?" he said more softly.
Xeriah looked him in the eyes, tears and silence told him all he needed to know. Her mouth trembled, she wanted to say more, but she knew he didn't want to know any more.
"Save your tears, you'll need them some other time." he said.
   Xeriah's eyes widened.
"If we want to get there we need to move. Now." he turned and marched on, Xeriah watched him, his large body swaying as he moved. He looked old- not just old, ancient. How old was this moody lion? "Are you coming?" he bellowed.
"Uh- yeah." Xeriah replied as she bounded on to catch up to him.  The two continued on together toward the darker skies.
