Words Below:
People say, "There is no such thing as a free lunch." Perhaps I should have listened. Let me explain. I was a middle aged man who lived by myself. Because I am an only child, my parents died years ago, and I lost touch with my more distant relatives, I expected to spend Thanksgiving alone.
A few days before Thanksgiving, I went to the grocery store to buy enough stuff for my own meal when the time came. Just outside was a sign advertising a free Thanksgiving dinner. I was skeptical but it was an offer too good to ignore so I wrote down the number on the sign and called them once I got home.
First I asked them if it was only for people in need. I may have been alone but I was hardly starving. They said it was for anyone who wanted to come. Next I asked if I needed to bring anything. I still had time to go back to the grocery store and would have been glad to do it. They said I only needed to bring myself and gave me the address.
I recognized the address as a store that had recently closed. With that knowledge, my suspicions faded. I figured they were opening a new business and this was just their way of getting attention.
On Thanksgiving afternoon, I arrived at the time they requested. Only the workers were present. I was the only guest. I did not think much of it as my mind made a bunch of excuses for them. Everyone else may have decided to show up late or perhaps I was the only one to actually take them up on their offer.
It looked like I was going to spend Thanksgiving by myself after all, unless I counted the staff which I did. Their uniforms appeared quite charming. They looked old fashioned and yet brand new.
They worked quickly. One of them pulled out a chair indicating where I was going to sit. Another one bought me a plate with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, corn, and mashed potatoes on it. Yet another one brought me a glass of milk.
"You can begin whenever you want," said the one who was in charge.
I said a small prayer to myself and began eating. Perhaps I should have been more specific about what I wanted. I doubt it would have made any difference, but at this point I am second guessing everything.
As I ate, I felt a little dizzy. It was nothing serious so I continued to eat. Soon the dizziness faded and I started to feel good. I felt more energetic than I had in decades. The workers quickly provided me with seconds which I even more quickly consumed.
Instead of feeling full, I actually felt thinner. As I stood up, the dizziness returned. The workers expected this and led me to a changing room in the back of the store. The room was empty except for a fancy maid outfit. Without really thinking about it, I changed into the uniform they provided.
When I came out, they led me to a full length mirror. I had to admit I looked good. Despite my senses telling me it was impossible, I looked just like a young woman, about 20. Besides looking good, I also felt good. Merely wearing the maid's outfit made me feel better than I had felt in a long time.
The one in charge put a broom in my hand. Instinctively, I started sweeping the floor. Cleaning the place felt really good, as if this is what I was meant to be doing all along. The one in charge, who was only wearing a servant's uniform asking if I wanted a job there. I eagerly agreed to do it. No job seemed better than being a maid.
Even though I knew what had happened to me, the pleasure of being a maid was too much for me to refuse. At least I have several decades to live over again. Only time will tell what will happen to me.
You don't believe me? Have a seat. Enjoy your meal. However, don't say I didn't warn you!
