Words Below:
Leon knew how to protect his village from human invaders, but this was something completely different. It was the time of a pandemic. About half the village was sick and Leon had no doubt many of them would die unless he found a way to do something about it. Being intelligent as well as brave, Leon knew about the legend of unicorn blood and how it could supposedly heal any illness.
There were many factors against him. Most people doubted unicorns ever even existed and most of those who did thought they had gone extinct. No evidence could be found supporting such claims. Some legends said unicorns would only come to fair maidens and other legends said that unicorn blood was more of a curse than a blessing. However, none of these things would stop Leon. The entire village needed his help and he would turn to any solution no matter how unlikely it might be.
Leon knew of a nearby forest with a river running through the middle of it. That was just the sort of place where a unicorn might appear. He journeyed to the river, set up camp, and waited. Unknown to him, a unicorn had been observing him before he even started his journey and knew exactly what he wanted to do. She decided such a noble act should be rewarded and granted him a gift while he was sleeping.
In the middle of the night Leon, or Lydia, opened her eyes. She knew something was different about her but something inside her was telling her not to worry. She went to the river and looked at her own reflection. Her reflection was surprisingly clear. It was that of a young maiden, like the ones unicorns came to in legends, except there was a unicorn horn sticking out of her forehead. Her ears were different too, like those of an animal.
While Lydia was feeling her own horn, the unicorn approached her. Lydia could not see the unicorn directly. She could only see her when looking at their reflection in the river.
"Your wish is granted!" the unicorn declared. "I have transformed you into a unicorn. Now you can heal the village with your own blood!"
"Why have you done this to me?" wondered Lydia followed by. "Are you immortal?"
"Unicorns are not immortal though we do live a very long time," said the unicorn answering the last question first. "All unicorns are female. We do not reproduce the way other species do. That is why we are so few in number. Sometimes we take human form and walk among you. We always appear as young maidens because they can't see our horns."
"On rare occasions, we let the most worthy among you join our species. Most causes are not even considered. Only the most noble causes like yours are even given a chance. We have to keep our numbers small. Otherwise we will be hunted to extinction."
The answers to her questions only led to more questions. Lydia knew that was how the world worked. She had no doubt the answers to her new questions would lead to yet more questions, but such questions could wait. Lydia had a village to save!
