Seeking to further expand the capacities of the grecken's nightfleet, the latter half of the order of 18AF's Type VII class cruiser submarines were suspended and re-ordered with substantial modifications. With keen attention being paid to Wakokuji submarine development, the Type VII-2 class featured a dramatically altered role and design, as they would be the first grecken submarine class to be built with aviation capabilities. Trading the aft 127mm gun for a hangar and a pair of asymettrically mounted 4/20mm anti aircraft guns, the type featured the heaviest anti-aircraft defense of any grecken submarine class to date, and exceeded the aviation capabilities of the vast majority of IWN aviation submarines; one aircraft could be stored in the hangar, while a second could be dissassembled and stowed with the catapult assembly aft of the conning tower. The aft torpedo room was entirely eliminated to provide copious aviation fuel storage reserves.

These modifications gave the VII-2 type remarkable capabilities in terms of naval reconnaissaince, at the cost of reduced submerged speed and handicapped underwater handling tendencies. Never-the-less, the type would quickly prove itself valuable to the navy, particularly given naval support for large scale mapping and survey operations (both on-the-level and covert) throughout the Central Emihst at the start of the 20sAF. The psychological effect of these operations was substantial, as rumors spread of GCK aircraft beginning to appear in the vicinity of remote foreign stations, far from any known aerodrome or surface vessel, functioning as a somber warning that the eyes of the greckstatt were everywhere.

The five VII-2 class submarines were named after ranged pre-historic weapons, a testament to the increased range of operations the type engaged in.
