More folio work, and most likely going on my 1st set of business cards.A character i've been developing since high-school for an old mecha idea; this is the 10th or so time i've re-designed it.
Ugh, can't believe how much time i spent on this. maybe i should give speed paints a go.

Al, this is pure HELL YEEEEH. ARGH. It's everything that I love about your work man. Those insane details, which never seem useless or overbearing any other elements, that surreal touch, the personal spin on familiar design... yessir. The metallics have come out really nice and the scratches aren't too numerous... It all fits.

Hmm. While this is very impressive as you have such skill, and it evidences that, as far as pieces of this caliber go this one falls short. The design of the robot is badass, but you did something with your highlights that makes the piece a little funky.
It looks like there are two light sources, the orb of energy in his hand and a light coming from the direction of the person viewing the piece. And then there are some highlights that don't look like they come from either of those directions.

I agree that your opinion is technically sound, but i'd rather side with my own aesthetic bias...i thought i pointed that out already =_= to me, art's more than just technicality and draftsmanship, cos some rules are meant to be broken

Hey, cheers for the critique! you are definitely right, there are 2 main light sources: one from the orb, and another from the direction of the viewer and a bit to the right, tho some of the details (especially around the edges of parts of the metal) aren't meant to be highlights, but scratch marks and rust.
There are also some bits that have specular reflection coming from the neighbouring metallic surfaces. specular isn't just some really bright highlight; it's a reflection. was trying to capture that. obviously you find it odd, and for that, i'll do better next time. for me, it turned out ok. wasn't aiming for hyper realism, but i sure as hell enjoyed drawing em in! seriously, give it try when painting metal; when i started on one i couldn't help myself
I also added more specular reflections to certain parts (regardless of light source) to show more of their shape and form because all the midtones were too close to black.
