Description
A Sushi making tutorial!Ingredients: Rice, Mirin, Veggies, Meat, Seaweed.
1. Prepare all of your ingedients ahead of time and place them around the table for your convienience.
2. Invest in a sushi mat. Seriously... you can't really make sushi without it. Why not? because if you want straight nice sushi, ones without lumpy parts... then you want a sushi mat. it makes rolling sushi easier
3. Mix your rice with mirin. It is best if you mix mirin right when your rice as finished cooking that way it mixes evenly. Wait for rice to completely cool before use.
4. When cutting your veggies/meats, cut them in LONG strips. ofcourse... you don't have to but it makes cutting the sushi later on a whole lot easier. no bits or pieces will fall out while you are cutting it. *I used small pieces because... it was left overs and all i had*
5. Put your seaweed on the mat. then place your rice all over the seaweed leaving only an inch at the top. *you'll notice i did not do this... i actually wasn't paying attention. i was more concerned about keeping the flys away and the wind from knocking over all my work*
6. Place all your ingredients horizontally across the rice in the center.
7. roll the sushi using the mat. take care not to roll the mat INTO the sushi!!!! You want to lift up the mat *part your holding* up as your roll it along.
8. once rolled, cut it into about... half inch pieces. *or any size you prefer*
9. Now, if you chose to use sesame seeds... you could have either placed it inside with the rest of your ingredients or chose to put it as a topping. once your sushi its cut just sprinkle some of it on top. this is the part where you add in other sauces if you please.
10. Place on plate and eat!
XD not to hard to make really. Note... i sort of made it to look complimentary to *Mel-P 's Crab Wonton tutorial. check that out here: [link]

uh... hrm. maybe daikon radish? it might be a bit on the 'hot' spicy side tho. wasabi is made from daikon and its hot. You can use soy sauce because its made from soy... soy sauce is pretty much common with sushi anyway. There are light variations of it too. i don't know much on vegetarian sauces but perhaps you can try maybe raspberry sauce? rasberry is good with alot of things. try browsing the oriental isle if they have any veg-based sauces. if not you can always experiement with your own concoctions or perhaps use oils or dressings.

I've been making sushi without Mirin and it worked out pretty good. I should use a sharper knife though, because sometimes my sushi comes out in.. lumps xD
But does Mirin actually do something important to the sushi? In the guides I've been reading Mirin wasn't named, but if you say it's better like that, I'll be sure to try!
Maybe a tip: When it's really way too sticky to slice, use some water on your knife, it makes it somewhat easier! (To avoid the problem I've been having) But look out that the sushi doesn't float away because of the amount of water!

it is normally used in the rice but you don't have to put it in there if you do not wish. it just gives the rice a nice sweet flavore *provided you don't put too much*. I don't know what guides it is tho but in japan they do use mirin in rice...even the sushi guys at the local grocer stores put it in there! LOL i go to krogers alot to buy sushi and they have the bottle sitting there in the stall.
lol, yes. a very sharp knife works well. and actually it can be slightly wet knife whether or not it is too sticky to slice. it also helps if the ingredients you use is not in small pieces but longer pieces. i did not think of that when i made my tutorial so it was hard for me to cut them properly.

thats jumbo shrimp, not chicken. shrimp tempora basically. you buy the powder batter in the oriental isle of your local grocery store to make it.

Thanks so much for the tutorial!!
Would 1 teaspoon sugar to 3 tablespoons white vinegar work as a substitute for Mirin?

This looks great, thanks for the tutorial ^^~ I was wondering, though- my dad and I make sushi a lot, but we never know which sauces to put on them afterwards xD;. What sauces are you using in this tutorial? Just the mirin, or are there others? o_0
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Corselia In reply to fishxlantern [2008-12-05 05:23:43 +0000 UTC]
i used mirin in the rice and its a very small ammount. if you put too much it becomes too strong. if your wondering what sauce you can use as a condiment then i used oyster sauce. you can also use soy sauce which is whats normally used.

Oyster sauce? I haven't heard of using it before, but I'll have to try it ^^. Thanks for replying so quickly, now hopefully my sushi will taste a little less plain xD;.

it is rice vinegar. you can get it in either the oriental section in the grocery store or in an oriental store.

Corselia In reply to xxAREESHAxx [2008-10-07 12:46:29 +0000 UTC]
if you asking about ingredients for sushi it can be anything you would like to put in it. I, myself, like to put avacado, shrimp, and crab in it. but if it is for mirin then no, sorry. i do not make mirin, i buy it. XD;

^^ Any good rules to follow with Onigiri?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Corselia In reply to Sabrina901 [2008-08-18 16:27:55 +0000 UTC]
hrmm, use nishiki short grain rice or this other japanese brand rice often found in the oriental isle. mix a tiny bit of mirin into it to give it a little flavor. when making the onigiri itself... its probably best to use a pre made mold cuz it's alot easier then making them by hand. if making them for later... separate the seaweed from the rice, never put together then fridge because the seaweed will get soggy and taste aweful.

this is such a helpful tutorial and makes it seem like anyone can do it yay! though I do have a question about the rice. I cook it normally, let it cool and then add the mirin?
Thanks!

Corselia In reply to axrai [2008-07-29 21:38:52 +0000 UTC]
cook the rice, add the mirin, stir, then cool. if you add it after it'll just be wet rice.
