Sermperent's torso is made of specialized bark that prevents Sermperent from being harmed by fire. The bark can catch on fire, but will not burn at all! Sermperent uses this to its advantage by letting itself get set on fire to prevent predators from attacking it, and to wrap itself around its prey so that its prey burns, suffocates and has its bones crushed at the same time. It is the only Pokemon capable of learning Phyto Fangs.
