I think the story behind that is that the movie was originally supposed to be "The Eye Creatures", but the studio said to make it "Attack of the Eye Creatures", and they quickly spliced in a new title addition over the existing title card...but, of course, made a typo.
I also think quite a classic "just didn't care" bit in that film is the fact that only two of the aliens have full costumes. The others: "Ah, just put on black bodysuits. No one will notice unless we film in broad daylight...uh oh."
