False Goblin Drake
(Falsusdeceptio Cobolorum)
False-Deceiving Goblin

Many creatures are considered deceptive by the general public, the False Goblin Drake is one of them. The Ankwan who regularly deal with Goblin Drakes see them as lowly tricksters and thieves of food and sometimes children.

In the wild, Goblin Drakes are found in trees of the northern redwoods, being a generalist treetop mesopredator and scavenger. They get their name from the fleshy flaps found on each side of the head, which when flared resemble the ears of a goblin. The main purpose of these structures is for intimidation and interspecies combat. Males are territorial and resolve conflict by signaling intruders rather than fighting like most drakes.

While stories about Goblin Drakes can be exaggerated, they do have the ability to mimic voices. Often luring them to a spot where the trickster can drop and kill the target with ease. As Ankwan travel deeper into the forest, they might hear a sound of a small child crying or a person calling for help. With the advent of technology, victims of such tricks are very rare, but once in a while an Individual animal becomes smart enough to deceive a hiker on a route.

The fur on their backs are actually quills, sharp and serrated to the touch, acting as predator defense. Their tails are also equipped with a bundle of detachable quills that can imbed itself deep into an attacker when cornered, further discouraging predators.
