Just think.....what would have happened to modern anime and manga had Osamu Tezuka been killed in the 1945 fire bombing of Osaka? Tezuka escaped being killed in the bomb shelter at the arms factory he was working at on the grounds of the Imperial arsenal near Osaka Castle when he was caught drawing western style cartoons in the factory bathroom.

His punishment? he was put atop an air raid warning tower over the factory, which collapsed when incendiary and block buster bombs passed by the tower and punched into the factory building below. The tower collapsed into the destroyed factory but Tezuka landed on a pile of trash which saved his life.

That night in Osaka set the course for the remainder of his life and shaped much of his post war works including Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion.
