Actually you can shoot macro with a wide range of gear -I like the MPE-65mm because it's easy to change the magnification.

Okay, now that is some good macro photography. You really make me want to venture into macro lenses. What do you mean by "shot at twice life size"?
I love that the depth of field isn't too extreme, despite the closeness. What surface is the reflection on, out of curiosity?

Thanks
I'm magnifying the scene by 2, so that the width of that shot is only 11mm -half the length of the sensor.
The liquid is honey.

Ah, having read your journal and explored your gallery a bit, I understand much better what you were up to. And I see a shot this phenomenal is the result of much practice. I'd never heard the reference to "x times life size" before, but as I understand now, it's related to the sensor, so is that terminology mostly limited to macro photography, with small subjects?
Interesting idea to wear the white shirt so you didn't scare them. Where'd you learn that?

The terminology is derived from macro photography and it's related to the image that's projected onto the sensor (or the film). So if I'm at life size and I'm shooting a subject that's one inch long the lens would project a one inch long image of the subject onto the sensor. Since an inch is 25.4mm and my sensor is 22mm I wouldn't be able to get all of the subject into the photo.
As for the white shirt: I learned that from working with beekeepers -it's the reason why all of their protective clothing is white

Despite the lack of pupils to use as a reference for its line of sight, it almost feels as if it's looking directly at us....
But seriously, this is such a beautiful shot. Great work!
