Description
"In the Lay of Eärendil is many a thing sung of his adventures in the deep and in lands untrodden, and in many seas and in many isles; but Elwing was not with him, and she sat in sorrow by the mouths of Sirion.", J.R.R.Tolkien, "The Silmarillion"I totally messed up my own idea (for I first wanted to make it in a dry graphic style, then I decided to turn it into a watercolour, then I disliked the result and tried to bring some bettering by applying pastels... So there's no wonder I'm disappointed by the result.)
Well, let's hope it will be my chance to learn thanks to my own mistakes

I see what you mean. This piece is all over the place, but there are beautiful things going on in various places. They just don't work collectively. I love the shape of the shadow and the silhouettes, but would like to see them flatter (I think that's what you were wanting). The light is nicely saturated, and the sky is beautiful, but it gets muddy in places. The vibrant light fights with some of the other vibrant shadow places in this piece. But the highlights on the birds and on the sand is on fire, nice colour changes and contrast with the cool shadows. I think you can learn a great deal from this. It is a nice piece, but you have definitely done better work. I am eagerly awaiting more from you. I am also very happy that you are not opposed to putting up the work you don't like as much, that's very brave of you. Thank you.

Yeah, you say exactly what I think
Actually, there are two major problems here: first I made a mistake with choosing colours (and they got too muddy), and second - my desision to use pastels. Watercolour effect bases on the transparency, while the pastels are not transparent, and look too heavy - so - now I actually think these media do not look good together. Especially when scanned.
I know some great artists of all combined them (my favorite Vrubel, for example) - but, well, I guess that on my level of drawing it makes the result poorer...
I posted it here because it is a very importaint picture for me, due to some RL events..
Thank you for honest words!

Hey, no problem. I owe it to you to be honest, I think. You work so hard on your images, and you are very accomplished, it wouldn't be fair to just tell you it looks "great." You're one of the best artists I know on this site. I respect you as an artist very much.

Come on, don't be so modest! Just the stance of this mother with her children, in the sunset, it's really great, just превосходный! Happy Mother's Day, after all!
Well done, бра́во, keep on like this!

There's no need for dissappointment at al! This turned out beautiful!!! I love the contrasts, and especially the light cast on the birds... it's mesmerising.
In many ways, I much prefer this to a dry graphic style, but I know the feeling of not getting what you wanted... still... you could always try again

It's turned out beautiful, for me! despite your indecision about the technique, and the consequent trouble for you (I can understand!), the result is... so magic, so pleasant

Oh, I'm sorry... I was wondering why you weren't active, recently, and this explains... that's why this picture is so emotional. But those figures are looking at the sun, warm and bright, that's the beauty in this picture, and maybe it's symbolic. I hope you feel better soon

Although you seem disappointed with the mixed media outcome, I think it looks FANTASTIC. Stuff from the Silmarillion is always hard to draw (I think...), but I feel like you got the mood pinned perfectly!!
Great piece. Love it!!

))

Well, whatever you say, I think it's amazing
The simple palette, and the light (oh, what a perfect light!), and specially the cast shadows... it all conveys a sense of "stillness", of waiting without despair, even with a hint of hope (is that a ship I see on the horizon?), and specially of love: the mother and her children, waiting for the husband/father, the most loved one...
I think the mediums used also give it a very special feeling: it wouldn't be the same done in any other way.
All in all, I'm completely in awe. That's something I really would love to have hanging on my wall (and I'm very special regarding what I want to showcase at home!).

Thank you very much! Yes, it is a ship on the horizon. It was supposed to be a "Farewell" picture. I'm glad you like it!
