AMBUSH AT REAPER'S PASS
(The military mapping team deals with Faux Physics & a Sabretooth Weasel kills Colonel George Aisley)

When I got back from mapping the outer rim of the ruins of Chicago's Westlawn, I was almost immediately drafted to deploy again with George Aisley and his 6 member SWAT team crew.

All was well, until we ran into some squid floaters, trying to mark us in ink from high above.

I knew the things weren't very dangerous, as they wanted to ink mark us so that they could tell how close or far we were, those huge floating squids were harmless, but overly paranoid.

Soon we ran into a swamp that extended too far out for us to dredge through.

To top that off, there was a report of a Faux Physics anomaly set that might be a hot or cold spot emanator.

Faux physics spots were not a natural phenomenon of the Phuturan Age or its lands, but instead some odd permanent warp in physics that was created when the teleportation time bubble accidentally brought us all here.

The 10 to 14 feet invisible zones could burn your skin or freeze your body for a minute or so; some teleport you a few meters away - and some even lock you into a floating position in midair for a while, until you somehow manage to wiggle back to the ground.

It was physics gone made in tiny little invisible packages.

Some of the men could actually spot them fairly well, as even though they are basically invisible, there is a weird wavy distortion around them, sort of like watching the heatwave emanate from a hot sidewalk.

Now, these creatures have to deal with a weird danger that was actually our fault.

We realized there was a huge rocky cliff face just to the right of us and we headed in that direction with the idea we could bypass the more dangerous swamplands.

Colonel Aisly ordered his men, the Verme company, to head out to take point, but just as he did this, I seen George get lifted about 7 feet up in the air by some unseen force.

In tandem, we could all see a pasting of snowy ice cover his skin and military outfit.

"Fuck, I'm stuck in a Faux Physics ditch!" The Colonel yelled.

But I noticed something that his men did not...

From the left side of my peripheral vision, I could spy a beautiful, mottled spot pattern, moving closer through the reeds and clover polyps.

I suddenly realized it was a Sabretooth Weasel, a creature two times bigger than an African Lion, with sabreteeth filled with extremely poisonous nerve venom.

It was a sickly vision, that weird giant weasel with its spiky tail and a row of flexible spines running down its back. This backed by a grisly smile maniacally pasted on its wicked face.

I now realized the crafty beast was actually using the Faux Physics warp spot to ambush prey - the thing was intelligent enough to use these odd physics anomalies as a trap, not controlling it, but by simply knowing what happens to any creature that stepped into it.

I aimed my percussion gun towards it, but like a lightning-fast cat, it jumped into the air and snatched the Colonel from his weightless wiggling.

The SWAT team immediately started shouting.

"Shoot that fucking thing!" First Commander Brent ordered, as Aisly was now squirming wildly in the creature's mouth, being dragged off down the rocky cliff face that overhung the Meridian Swamplands.

We tried to take chase, but the thickness of the swamp's vegetation slowed us down, and the monster weasel was so fast, it was nearly out of our sight.

Still, we could hear Colonel Aisly's bloodcurdling screams, as they disappeared into the thick underbrush of the cliffside.

"We need to call in more men!" Brent cried.

But I was now the leader of this platoon, and I knew what the wilds of Gothalebra had in store for him.

"Don't - you'll only get more men killed and waste precious ammunition; that thing is venomous enough to kill an elephant in an hour. There is no doubt Colonel Aisly is dead by now." I explained.

Brent and his men let out a big, dissipated sigh.

"What now then?" Brent asked still flabbergasted after losing George.

"We follow the cliff ridge up to Grim Drip Valley and hope we don't run into another one of those damnable things!"
