Description The Grumman F11F Tiger was not exactly beloved by the brass of the US Navy. It was eclipsed in performance by its larger, more powerful contemporary F8U Crusader. While not as big, fast or powerful as the Crusader it was perfect for use from the Royal Navy's smaller carriers. 75 were transferred as part of post-October War military aid to the Fleet Air Arm and, after some modifications, were put into use by the UK.
The 75 used aircraft were rebuilt by Armstrong-Whitworth at Coventry, with modifications including an internal ammonia system to cool the seekers of up to four Firestreak missiles, installation of an AI.23A AIRPASS I radar and replacing the Wright J65 engine with the more powerful RB146 300R-series Avon. Provision of in-flight refuelling probes and 30mm Aden cannons in place of the original quartet of Colt 20mm autocannon resulted in the aircraft being designated F.1A.
Additional aircraft were constructed at Coventry under licence as the Tiger F.2. Compared to the second-hand F.1, the British-built models were fitted for in-flight refuelling, equipped with the Green Saga RWR and improved AI.23C AIRPASS II radar, armed with twin 30mm Aden cannons, provision made for the more capable Red Top missile and the engine replaced with the more fuel-efficient RB147 400R Avon with variable stator blade compressor. This model rapidly replaced the F.1 in service with the FAA, with the American-built aircraft being used alongside the Hunter T.8D for training until being donated to the reconstituted Free French Forces in 1969.
