Description
An oil pastel painting of my brother's cats "Merlin" (on the left) and "Cobweb" (on the right). Sennelier and Neopastel oil pastels. A4 size (12x8 in). Lots of smoothing with fingers, paper stumps and even a firm paint brush to try to get a fur texture.This is my first attempt at painting or drawing animals, so please do let me know what you think.

I've never tried fur or animals in general (except a horse and once, a wolf - poor wolf

This was copied from a photograph which my brother sent me. It is very unlike my usual style, as I was looking for as much realism as possible, so I printed the photo at the same size as the pastel paper and transferred the outline using tracing paper. Maybe that's cheating a bit, but there's nothing worse than hours of work spoiled by a poor original drawing. Drawing from life sounds like fun, but I don't think it would have worked out well in this scenario!
The fur was easier that I thought it would be - probably a lot easier than with liquid paints. The drawn marks were all in the direction of the fur, and then the soft oil pastels are great for smoothing and dragging.
