Concept design for the Charon, a mecha design used by the Pirate Clans.

While the Cutlass and Corsair were modified form older designs and re-purposed technology, the Charon was built from the ground-up to be a high-performance machine for the elite of the Pirate forces. Faster and more maneuverable then either design, it is heavily armoured and armed with an array of missiles and railgun weapons. The entire design is intended to be intimidating in its appearance, with a skull-like head and chest design, while the drop tanks take on a crossbones-like appearance.

The downside of this performance is cost. Each Charon has to be hand-built in the Clans' hidden factories, built on demand for the wealthiest and most powerful of the pirate leaders. As they share few parts beyond weapons with the other designs, they are also maintenance-intensive and expensive to run. However, the very appearance of one of these designs can oft be enough to intimidate an opponent into surrender.

I have no idea what the text on the right knee is meant to say. Possibly its in futuristic Pirate Clan language or something.

Original sketch c2001-2002; as you can see, virtually nothing of the first version of the design survived. This is a good thing.
