Description I've always nursed a secret love affair with geometry. This is one of three faces to the Lament Configuration, a puzzle box featured in Clive Barker's Hellraiser stories. Doing it digitally would have been cleaner and easier, but I wanted to create the feeling of something that was hand-crafted in an antique style. Pencil, ruler, ink, with a rust texture painted in Photoshop at the end.

Here's the [link] to the steps involved.

Note: This is not my original design. According to lore, it's the cult-inspired design of French architect Philip LeMarchand. I'm suspect, however, that the whole story is a fabrication derivative of Barker's Hellraiser mythos. I just discovered a gallery in New York that makes museum-quality replicas (and really cool variations) of the forbidden boxes. [link]

Unbelieveable. Will you do the 3rd design as well? It would make a great papercraft model

Nice work, the texturing is superb!

Yeah, the design origins are Barker's fabrication - he has this fascinating calligraphic style of doodling, and that's where the puzzlebox's decorative work comes from. If you watch a film called The Forbidden ([link] - a black and white 8mm film Clive made a long time ago) there is footage of his hand actually painting out these same designs freestyle. From memory, it's meant to be angels tattooing the flesh of a man (a precuirsor to the boy at the opening and closing of the Books of Blood short stories, and also Onakha from the Nightbreed film).

Hmm this one would do a very good packaging for a CD; I would like to do the CD that goes with it
