Description

UPDATED 2024/03/23 - Rewrote the description for greater accuracy and provided proper credit to the original fan creator.  My apologies to all concerned, no harm meant and hopefully no harm done.

Ported to OBJ from the fan creation by ThomastheCat and associates for the video game Starfleet Command III (SFC3) and later ported by Trek fans for both use with other SFC series games and other video games.  Additional background data invented by yours truly.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

According to the original fan writeup, the Cardassians developed the Va'kor during the Dominion War (DS9) originally as a new battlestation type.  The war ended before the first Va'kor was even started, and given its designed power and capabilities it got redesignated as a starbase once these began to be built in the postwar period.  The first batch of these were built to replace Cardassian starbases, battlestations, and other major space based military facilities lost during the war, with a second batch tentatively on order once that effort was done but with final approval still pending in order to replace older starbases on a one-for-one basis.

The Cardassian Va'kor clearly took some of its design cues from the older TOS-era standard Federation starbase (see separate entry), in particular its general shape, six-armed layout, and roughly the same division and usage of interior space within its main hub.  That said its six docking arms are uniquely Cardassian and the only thing they share with their older Federation counterpart is ability to do ships.  One big advantage of the later Cardassian design it can accommodate the larger starships of the TNG/DS9/VOY era given that it utilizes an open set of docking structures on each arm, as opposed to the fully enclosed bays of the old TOS era Federation design.

This is fanon, although its very good fanon IMHO and works well with what had already been established in the semi-canon SFC series.
