The fourth ship to be named Giuseppe Garibali, after the famed Italian hero, was the first aircraft carrier of any kind to be completed and to enter service with the Italian Navy, or Marina Militare as it is called today (*).  Often classified as a light carrier (CVL) due to its size and also as a helicopter carrier (LHA), it more properly falls into the Cold War category of through deck cruiser.  This concept was developed by NATO in the mid to late 1960s to define a hybrid cruiser-carrier that carried sufficient defensive weaponry to operate without any escorts and having VTOL/VSTOL type aircraft making up the bulk of its air wing.  Other examples from the era include the British Invincible class and the Russian Kiev class.  The modern LHA designation comes from its amphibious assault support function, with the ability to transport up to 600 fully armed troops along with all of their gear as required.  Garibaldi originally entered service in 1985 with only helicopters in its air wing due to political concerns, but once these were resolved it began operating British-built AV-8 Harrier jump jets on a limited and as-needed basis.  It was later upgraded to support the improved AV-8B and has been recently been upgraded yet again to support the export version of America's supersonic F-35B Lightning II.  It's been considered very successful during its service life and one of the best examples of its type of warship, and its design influences can be seen in similar carriers built or ordered for construction by other nations in the following decades.  Now well along in years, Giuseppe Garibaldi is currently slated to be decommissioned and sent to the barn once the newer Italian aircraft carrier Trieste enters service, although potential conversions for other roles have been discussed and are still possible as I write this (fall 2021).  To find out more about the Italian Cold War era carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi, follow the links below.

This was created in SketchUp and it shows, with major issues regarding flipped normals.  This is common with most SketchUp models, as it takes a while for new users of that 3D modeling program to figure out what surface normals are and how they can affect the look of the model they're creating once it's ported and rendered outside of that program. (wink)  I'm putting this up partly as a placeholder and partly to let you know that a 3D model of this ship exists, although you're going to have to work on it a bit for it to look right.  You can port it either with the SketchUp model (.skp extension) import function of your favorite 3D software or by using the standalone free 3D model conversion program ModelConverterX.  This has also been ported for use with Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator series, so porting to other model formats IS possible provided you're willing to put in the work.

ASIDE - Say what you want about the Italians during World War II, but Giuseppe Garibaldi is widely considered to be one of the best carriers of its day in European waters during the back half of the Cold War, even over the British Invincibles (a-hem).  Also, as noted above, it's considered one of the best and most influential light/through-deck/assault carrier designs of its time.  That's something you need to consider when playing with your Cold War era fantasy fleets.

(*) Italy never completed its very first carrier, the World War II era Aquila, and it was eventually scrapped unfinished due to the fortunes of war.  See separate entry.
