Description

Ported to OBJ from the model created by Klaus Novak for Microsoft's Flight Simulator X (FSX).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  No model download.

The Izumo (EE-zoo-moh') class are currently the largest and most powerful warships in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in the early 21st century.  There are two ships in the class, Izumo and Kaga, both named for famed World War II era Japanese warships, and both entered service in 2015 and 2017 respectively classified as helicopter destroyers (DDH), just like the Hyuga class predecessors.  This unique classification was necessary to get around the iron clause in the post-World War II Japanese constitution that forbids its government from building purely offensive weapon systems.  Any and all forms of aircraft carrier were barred because of this; however, helicopter carriers (i.e. "gator carriers") were not and that is how both Izumos were originally built, just like the preceding Hyugas.  What changed all of this was when nearby Communist China began putting its own fleet-sized true aircraft carriers into service, first with Liaoning in 2012 and Shandong in 2019.  This move by China made true aircraft carriers necessary for Japan's self-defense, thus bypassing any previous constitutional restrictions.  Fortunately both Hyuga and Izumo had been built with potential carrier conversion in mind, and both classes were quickly converted into true carriers.  In the case of Izumo a ski jump ramp was installed on the port side of its forward flight deck and other systems added or quickly converted to support the operation of VTOL and V/STOL naval aircraft, such as the American-built F-35B Lightning, V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor craft, and and appropriate support aircraft and helicopters to boot.  The JMSDF also received lots of assistance from their longtime allies in the United States Navy (USN) in resuming full-fledged aircraft carrier operations for the first time since World War II (75 years!).  It was a decision forced upon Japan and it was not taken without a lot of national soul-searching, but once it was made there was no going back.  Japan is once again a member of the world aircraft carrier club, and it is now only a matter of time before they resume building true aircraft carriers from the keel up.  To find out more about the JMSDF's Izumo class aircraft carriers, follow the link below:

This is a straight port with no changes by me.  It depicts lead ship JS Izumo after the first phase of her conversion into a true aircraft carrier in 2020.  A second phase is planned for 2025 which will significantly alter her bow and interior, but that will require a new model at the appropriate time.

While I am not making my OBJ port of Mr. Novak's model available for download, you can get it from many popular Flight Simulator series add-on sites online and port it for your own personal use with the appropriate software.  Please give him proper credit as the original creator if you do.  There's also a couple of excellent SketchUp models of Izumo in her original form which you can get from Google's 3D Warehouse at the links below and port/mod yourself for whatever you need.  Again, please credit their original creators if you do.  Thank you.

P.S. - I recommend Sir Topham hatt's SketchUp Izumo over rintaro3776's, as it has no aircraft on its flight deck and is thus a "clean" 3D carrier model, if you know what I mean.  I think you do. (wink)
