The Space Pod is a small excursion vehicle carried by the Jupiter II in a very small hangar (barely enough room for the Space Pod) that can be accessed both from inside the ship and also from the outside via a large underside hatch. It is a two man craft, although there's just barely enough extra room for three, and its main purpose is for extended recon and survey of a planetary surface and thus sparing the main ship (the Jupiter II) from having to do this itself. It made its on-screen debut in "Kidnapped in Space" and was then used in other selected episodes for the rest of the third season. Probably the best shots of the Space Pod being launched are in the episode "The Space Primevals."
In real life the Space Pod was modeled on NASA's Apollo Lunar Lander and has obvious design nods to it, such as the shape and placement of its windows. The version on the right of the preview piccy is the original with the tall large antenna array, and then it was simplified somewhat with a smaller and shorter main antenna array of a different design and other tweaks as the season progressed to become the version on the left. Use of either one is legitimate in any fan's classic LIS recreations, although most prefer the simpler later version for obvious reasons. The changes in the Space Pod can be easily handwaved away as having been done by the Robinsons themselves, although the exact reasons for this are neither shown nor explained on the show.
