Ported to OBJ from the Starfleet Command (SFC) series conversion by Darkdrone from the video game Star Trek: Shattered Universe (STSU). Long gone were the days when every Tholian ship had to start building at the old single automated shipyard they had brought with them when they came to our galaxy (SFB), and which could only produce standard TOS/TAS era patrol cruiser types. It was a different game at the start of the post-TMP era. Amethyst was a radical design departure for the Tholians and represented one of their first design triumphs of the early post-TMP era for their newly starship design and construction industries.

One look at Amethyst is all you need to tell that it is no traditional Tholian starship design. Indeed it was quite radical then and now, as if the Tholians were trying to push their new shipbuilding capability to its uttermost limit back then. The Hydrans call it "the crystal bird" in their native language, and there is a definite bird-like appearance to it which the Tholians claim to be coincidence. Per their own account they arrived at this particular hull form and shape because it was the optimum for what they needed in a post-TMP era Tholian battlecruiser that could outfly and outfight the best of its opposite Klingon numbers back in the day. That said the first-ever encounter with one of these was when a lone Amethyst was ambushed and destroyed by the QuD class destroyers of the Klingon 15th Destroyer Flotilla near the end of the TMP era. This was the only Amethyst ever lost in combat, and the Klingon victory at the time was later soured somewhat once they learned that it had been a class prototype with incomplete armament and systems out on space trials. The Tholians never lost any other Amethysts once the production model entered service, and many Klingon starships and lives were lost attempting unsuccessfully to duplicate that earlier feat. Amethyst could both outfly and outfight a K't'inga with the right Tholian captain in command, and the Klingons at the time soon developed a healty respect for it.

Amethyst was still in service with the Tholians during the whole of the TNG/DS9/VOY era, although by then it had been reduced to second-tier status given the introduction of newer and better starship classes into Tholian service. They were upgraded for continued use in this later era and were still considered formidable opponents in battle despite their age. It was still common to find C3-modified Amethysts serving as Tholian sector fleet flagships given the excellent reputation of the class down through the decades, and they were still sometimes encountered alone and pulling routine patrol duty in selected parts of the borders of Tholian space -- given that they were quite capable of taking care of themselves under normal conditions.

This is semi-canon, given its use in multiple Franchise licensed video games.
