Description

Ripped, ported to OBJ, and textures modified by me from the game stock model included with the naval computer arcade game Air Conflicts: Pacific Carriers (ACPC) by Maximum Games.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The Kennebec class was a series of sixteen oilers (type AO) built for the United States Navy (USN) during World War II due to the fact that it was dreadfully short of fleet oilers at the start of the war.  The name actually covers three different subclasses, all based on somewhat different MARCOM/MARAD hull types.  They are the Kennebec subclass proper (Type T2), the Mattaponi subclass (Type T2A), and Chiwawa class (Type T3-S-A1).  The design was based on the prewar large civilian tankers Mobilfuel and Mobilube but with more powerful engines in order to meet USN design specs.  All sixteen Kennebecs survived the war but were almost immediately decommissioned and placed in reserve in favor of keeping the newer and larger Cimarron class in service.  Seven would be subsequently reactivated for Cold War service at various times, with the last ones in commission serving during the Vietnam War.  All were scrapped at various times save for the former Chiwawa (AO-68), the only survivor of the class.  She was eventually sold for commercial use, renamed Lee A. Tregurtha, and still serves her current owners on the U.S. Great Lakes as of this date (early 2021).  To find out more about the USN's Kennebec class fleet oilers, follow the link below:

This is a straight port of the game stock model, with my only change being to lighten the textures so it wouldn't look so dark.  It is misidentified in the game as a Cimarron class tanker, which was based on a MARCOM/MARAD Type T3-S2-A1 hull.  Cimmarons were a lot longer and had their forward deckhouses more centrally located than does this model,  It is closer in almost all respects to the MARCOM/MARAD T2/T2A standard, which was the basis for Kennebec and Mattaponi.  Chiwawa is also very similar, being a somewhat stretched T2/T2A at its most basic, even though it was given the "confusing" T3-S2-A1 designation instead.  That's why I am presenting this model as representing the Kennebec class and not Cimarron per the game.

This is not my model.  All I did was port it for you and mod the textures as described above.  Please credit Maximum Games for the original.  You do not have to credit me for my part.

TRIVIA - The two most familiar members of the Kennebec class to most folks today are the Neches (AO-47) and Neosho (AO-48), due largely to the old (and cheap) Lindberg 1/520 plastic model kits - which scale well with other older model kits by Revell and Airfix in the 1/500 to 1/600 scale range.  Neches was one of the few USN ships damaged by a Japanese human torpedo (kaiten) during World War II.  She also provided support for USN operations during the invasions of the Marshall Islands and Okinawa, with time off for repair in drydock following the kaiten attack.  She was also one of the longest serving Kennebecs, not being retired from USN service until 1970.  Neosho supported USN naval vessels during the invasions of the Marshall Islands (together with Neches), the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa (along with the repaired Neches) during World War II.  Neosho was sold for civilian use in 1947, and eventually scrapped in 1964.
