I played around with an AU for 'evil' Rusty a while ago. Though that AU admittedly was an evil Firestar bringing Scourge to the Moonstone to receive nine lives and recognise BloodClan as a clan. ahahaha maybe one day I'll explain that one rip
Another concept: failed prophecy. Fire alone can save the clan. Can. /can/ save the clan. Not will. Young Rusty ventures into the forest but is chased off by Tigerclaw. He is chased through twolegplace and Scourge comes to his rescue, recognising Tigerclaw. Scourge may be evil, but he does have a heart and sometime it resurfaces. He defends Rusty and chases Tigerclaw off. Of course Rusty's curious and BloodClan is now his interest since the bone eating forest cats tried to kill him. Rusty is inducted into BloodClan after hanging around a bit. Though the operation of the clan is questionable at first, Rusty settles into it. He slowly becomes one of Scourge's most trusted cats, serving as a 'deputy' alongside Bone. They form a close bond, referring to each as 'brother'. Ironic ahaha

Tigerstar comes into twolegplace to request parley with BloodClan's leaders - Scourge, Rusty, and Bone. Tigerstar is shocked to see two cats he recognises - Rusty and Scourge, and they are not impressed to see him. They agree to follow Tigerstar to the forest, things progress as is canon. Tigerstar is ripped open by Scourge, who holds the bigger grudge.

Rusty's natural leadership skills hold BloodClan together during the battle much better than in the books. He acts as a battle general, commanding cats as they fight and working with them. BloodClan is actually a threat. ThunderClan [under Tigerstar's rule as without Fireheart, Bluestar is murdered as Tigerstar intended] falls apart without a leader. ThunderClan's deputy, Longtail, orders the remaining ThunderClan cats [Cinderpelt, Dustpelt, Frostfur, Goldenflower, Greystripe, Swiftclaw, Whitestorm, Tawnypaw, Brightheart, Fernpaw, and Ashpaw] to retreat. Darkstripe, Brackenfur, Mousefur, Sandstorm, Thornpaw, and Bramblepaw are slain. ShadowClan, under Brokenstar, suffers heavy losses, as does WindClan and RiverClan.

The battle is called off when Rusty orders a retreat after Bone is killed and Scourge is badly wounded. BloodClan suffers losses too, but they retreat in time to hide and lick their wounds. When the clans leave the forest, BloodClan takes over what little patches of forest/moorland there is. They stay in their same place. Scourge manages to pull through, though has crippling injuries. Rusty is now the main leader of BloodClan, taking care of punishments and the like. Over time BloodClan falls apart as the twolegplace starts getting too big.
