Description
Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio maxSo i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)
I made a JPEG tutorial because:
1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop
2) I didnt feel like writing HTML
If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.
In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

Hey, it's me again! ...the n00b who needs help with everything. XP
Okay, so I've downloaded GIMP and tried to adapt to this tutorial... Does GIMP actually have somthing similar to "Layer Styles"? (What is used on the Atmosphere Layer before applying Gaussian Blur to the Shadow Layer.) I can't seem to find anything similar and I'm pretty sure I can't get around omitting the proper lighting! ...Come to think of it, is it actually possible to make a planet in GIMP using this tutorial? 'Cuz, honestly... it's looking pretty bleak on my end. XP

I've never used GIMP so I'm useless on that end, hehe.
One of these days, I'll download it and see what I cam come up with.

I keep recommending the GIMP to people who say that they dont have photoshop. I've never used the GIMP myself but I might give it a try and see what happens.

First of all, great tutorial. Having lots of fun with this one.
But okay...I get to the step where you delete the shadow outside the planet and I ctrl+click the base layer as well, and for some reason, I can't copy. I end up pasting and the previous thing I copied gets pasted. I cant seem to copy the layers like I'm supposed to. What's wrong and do you know how to fix this? Thanks.
BTW, I am using CS3.

dinyctis In reply to Overachievious [2009-01-04 23:50:18 +0000 UTC]
Maybe i'm rusty on this one but you're not supposed to paste anything after you erase the extra shadow.
Are you talking after you blurred the shadow layer?

Ah okay. And yeah...a while after.
But it should be fine now.
I figured out a way to do it differently with the same results. ^___^
Thanks.
