Description Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio max

So i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)

I made a JPEG tutorial because:

1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop

2) I didnt feel like writing HTML

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.

In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

Keep in mind that the texture will have to be made smaller in size so that you minimize the blurriness. It is inevitable that the center of the image gets blurry. So making it smaller is the best way to reduce its appeal.

Tried it out, but did not quite came up with the same thing you did. Your planet seems to have more contrast or something. Anyway, thanks. Great tut!

It may have to do with the texture itself, or with how you work the shadows.

If you click and hold the rectangular marquee button, a small menu will open with other shapes. Try that.

This is an awesome tutorial. I'm having a lot of trouble though when it comes time to create a new layer and link it to the atmosphere layer. For some reason it won't let me do anything with it...help?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to peaceful-oblivion [2006-08-26 20:07:06 +0000 UTC]

If you're using CS2, then you have to ctrl+click both layers so that they're both highlighted in the layers palette. Then you can go to the layers menu or click on the little right-arrow at the top right of the layers palette and then you should be able to see the link an merge options.

Great tutorial, It was very helpful. You should post it at [link] and earn credits for your work and use them in the shop to get brushes, psds, and other items from other artists. We also have a tournament coming up next month for the winner to win $30.

What do you mean by "not selected but active" for the shadow layer? I am using Photoshop CS2, if that helps. I'm stuck. I can't get that step to work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to LaCookieBandit [2006-07-10 19:54:42 +0000 UTC]

Selected basically means having the marquee selection (dotted line) around an object (a circle, in this case)
Active means that its the layer you're working on (highlighted in the layers palette).

LaCookieBandit In reply to dinyctis [2006-07-11 02:59:03 +0000 UTC]

Ok. Now that I got that down, I realized that I cannot copy and paste the layers after selecting them. Did I mess up the previous step or something? Sorry if I'm being a pest, I'm just determined to get this right.
