The feathers I use are much larger than chicken feathers. Mine come from places like the tails of turkeys, so they get up to 16 inches in length. I'm not saying that small feathers won't work however. I would try to group them if you can.

Oh, there are a couple of tricks. One is to spray them with a sealer (found at most stores who sell any craft and painting supplies). Another is to make sure you "zip" up the feathers with your fingers before painting on them. Most of the time, if there is a split in the feather, it will go naturally back together. However, if it splits after it's been painted on, that part of the feather will no longer "zip". You just have to plan ahead and make sure the paint is being applied in a way that helps hold the feather together, rather than getting between the tiny barbs and pushing them apart. If you need any more help, I'd be glad to answer more questions.

That's quite impressive. Is there a way to fix mistakes? Like if you messed up on the anatomy and you went over board and you want to get it off the feather. Just curious. I'm new to this and I know I'll make many m istakes. Not very good with paint either ^^'

dittin03 In reply to QuickSilverRaye [2008-02-26 17:43:29 +0000 UTC]
there is no fix, unless you are painting a background... that way you won't see that part of the anatomy you messed up on. Just paint a background behind the subject, painting over the bad anatomy while you go. Other than that, there is no way to take paint off of a feather...

Ahh, that's what I thought honestly. I may have to pratice a bit more of my painting before I go onto feather painting, huh? X3 Thank you for that

dittin03 In reply to QuickSilverRaye [2008-02-26 19:26:28 +0000 UTC]
Eh, not necessarily. I think that no matter what you're painting on, you can still learn from it. But if you are just learning and plan on messing up, then don't use something you have a limited supply of. Use paper first

dittin03 In reply to SeishinUma [2008-01-25 18:21:49 +0000 UTC]
There are a few ways, you can try tape, or you can glue it down to something. But my favorite now is to spray the feather with acrylic sealer. I'd try spraying it on a test feather first though.

thats really cool! i wish i could do somethin like that...i have a qustion. i see where you painted it. on a table...the feathers arnt on cardstock or glass or whatever you put it on.... so... how do you move it without it falling apart? and again, really really really good job!

There's lots of ways to work with them. Sometimes I don't use anything at all to keep them in place. Other times, taping them or gluing them down does the trick. Lately I've also experimented with acrylic sealer spray. That stuff is awesome

Yeah, it "dries" in like 15 minutes but you can't technically handle it for like 2 hours...

This is really good, but I don't a have a steady enough hand to do that. . .maybe I could try this but on paper. Do you think that would work?

What do you mean, on paper? just the animal paintings themselves?

Well, use the tutorial, but instead of using feathers, use paper.

I see. Yes, that would work too! I wish my tutorial were better though for that. It mainly talks about how to paint on a feather and not so much painting technique itself

Do you find your feathers outside or buy them somewhere (craft store, Internet?) If you find them outside, do you sterilize them? How?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dittin03 In reply to Zaphy1415926 [2007-10-26 14:17:14 +0000 UTC]
I have gotten feathers in several ways, but the majority of them come from hunters and taxidermists. When they come as an entire pelt, they are usually cured, which makes them last a very long time. From there, I remove them from the leather.
