The Birdman of Rapa Nui (aka Easter Island) was thewinner of a ceremonial contest. To achieve this title, one must retrieve the first Sooty Tern egg of the season from a nearby islet. It was like an Iron man competition - but with more death! Many drowned, fell, or were eaten by sharks.
The native peoples developed an entire cult based around this ceremony and left petroglyphs such as this:
