Being turned into a girl in the middle of class due to a prank could do that.
Edit: Now in color...although in reality the tights are sheer-burgundy but didn't come out as well I might post that variation later.

*nods* I like to think of it as the brain staying as similar as possible. Problem is, that means that they're still their original gender mentally, so they shouldn't adapt, and if you can change that, then why wouldn't you change everything else, too, including memories?

Hmmm, well I guess the argument to that is that they'd be adapting on their own terms, via means of coping mechanisms after the fact, rather than a re-write.
I guess it depends on the method by which they are changed to an extent, and just how far it affected them, even the intent behind the change if it was shaped for a specific purpose by a sentient entity.

Problem with 'adapting on their own terms' is that it doesn't work. That's why transsexuals exist. If the mind doesn't match the body there is much angsting. You can try coping mechanisms for a while, but it'll always be there, gnawing at your consciousness.
