Two years after the disaster known as the M45 Sub Machine Gun first entered service in 1964, a replacement was being drawn up. It was agreed that the weapon should be short and use the .45 caliber round that all Draconian pistol-caliber weapons have used, but a complete design was not completed until 1968. The XM48, designed with an integral suppressor as standard, was proven to be much more capable than its predecessor. After being accepted into service as the M48 in 1975, the weapon was given to vehicle crews, pilots, and special forces. Recently M48s have been given to single-seat fighter and attack aircraft pilots, hidden in the back of the ejection seat in a toughened steel compartment. This allows the pilots to have a way to defend themselves on the ground if they get shot down.
