Zap Hurricane wasn't too much of a rising wonderbolt star like Rainbowdash had hoped for.
Zap WAS a good flyer, an amazing one actually, and had a strong shot at getting into the Wonderbolt academy if she aimed for it, well, in a few years at least, but she herself had no real interest in it, preferring to help Applejack with her own chores and cooking.

Boom blast was something of a second chance with that, and when he was healthy enough to really take up flight lessons, he was kind of just shoe-horned into the time that Zap assumed was hers and Rainbows specifically.
Of course, Zap wouldn't ever get MAD over that, Boom was so sick, even she was glad to see him up in the air! Even if she DID wish she could keep her separate lessons...
