Of course... the old Sonic the Animated Series was born from the Archie Comics series, which only RECENTLY ended. And when the games and cartoons saw the change in Sonic's design... his design in the comics was updated with them...
And through the comics, Sally and Sonic have remained the comic's prime couple. About the only time they were apart was when the Archie series decided have Sally go from the action princess earlier in the series to a easily stressed palace princess who couldn't take Sonic being the hero. That lasted until the comic writers had Sally realize that Sonic was who she truly loved and she couldn't take seeing Sonic with someone else (and in the comics, Fiona turned out to be a traitor) and Sally did return to being the action princess... which lead to her roboticization... which was the last comic that I'd been able to buy...

Why Amy upset? She should plot a plan by flirting with SATAM Sonic so Sally can get jealous then Amy will get Modern Sonic back.
