Description OK, another Gaara pic. I'm not sure why I keep drawing him...
This was inspired by a pic from the Marvel website.
[link] >click on spiderman, and you'll see the pic I mean. It's a fantastic piece of Sandman.

This took a couple of days on and off to do. Completely digital. First time I tried sand like that too, so some bits are fairly sloppy. Well, hope you like it.

*Update - 5 Oct 05*
Finally posted the new version of this. I added more detail to the shirt, changed the eyes a little, attempted to fix the kanji, decreased the title point size and improved the colour (I think) So, it should look much nicer now. After fixing the calibration on my monitor, I discovered how washed out the original looked, so I hope this is an improvement.
Thanks to everyone who faved/commented on this. I got a message saying it had been viewed 1000 times

sorry, but I'd rather you didn't use it for something like that.
I appreciate that you asked me first though I just like to keep track of where my work is.

The sand looks very cool!!
And.... how did u make ur avatar with just an Anbu mask(no background)? Can u teach me pls?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dtownley1 In reply to kago-woo [2006-04-19 11:06:17 +0000 UTC]

ah, my avatar was made as a gif using transparency. Using a digital colour meter (basically an eyedropper tool) I took a reading of the DA grey colour. Then, set that colour to the matte colour for the gif transparency. What that does, is add a little halo of that colour at the edges, so when viewed over the colour, the transition is smooth.

kago-woo In reply to dtownley1 [2006-04-28 15:36:14 +0000 UTC]

?? How to use an eyedropper to take the reading of the DA grey colour?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dtownley1 In reply to kago-woo [2006-04-29 12:46:10 +0000 UTC]

I have a separate app that lets me do that, for anything on the screen. If you don't have anything like that, take a snapshot of your screen, load it into photoshop or whichever image editing software you have, and use the eyedropper tool to get a reading of the grey AROUND the avatar. Set that as the matte colour for your gif.

kago-woo In reply to dtownley1 [2006-04-30 12:29:48 +0000 UTC]

Oh...I see. Now I understand aldy.
But.... What did u mean by 'Matte' color?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dtownley1 In reply to kago-woo [2006-04-30 13:32:20 +0000 UTC]

aldy?
Matte colour is basically the background colour for gifs with transparency....or more specifically, what the background colour WILL BE. So, if you want a gif of a circle over a red background, you set the matte colour to that specific red. It will add some edge pixels of that colour, so when it's placed over that red, the actual edge pixels seem to blend properly.

You have to really test it to see what I mean.

I'll see what I can do. Be sure to ask me any other photoshop questions you have. I've been working with it for years.

That's really nice! The hair and sand are especially impressive. As I am trying to teach myself how to do photoshop renderings...with the help of books...how did you get the hair and sand to look so real?

This one totally blew me away!

-Ren-

(Forgive me if that got posted more than once....my computer errored on me and I can't tell if it posted or not! Sorry!)

haha, I think the post came through 3 times But don't worry about it.

This one was actually pretty experimental... I'd never done sand before, so I experimented with brushes in photoshop, using the burn tool to bring out some tones, and give it a little more depth. I have a weird way of doing hair. First I do a base colour, really roughly, just fill everything in. For some of the hair overlapping skin or other details, I leave that for later. Then I work on the edges, where the hair stands out or would curl away from the head. Then I just work in shadows and highlights using a finer brush.

I actually thought of a new technique while writing this But I'll have to test it first

Thanks for the comments!

Woops! Sorry bout that...this computer is evil...and the internet is dial-up which makes it even eviler! ^^

Thanks for the tips...I'm trying out stuff too...trying to get better with photoshop. It is quite fun...and I'm sure the more I do the better I'll get. I'll have to practice with hair. I'm always so envious of how people get it to look so real...so I'll try out what you suggested! Thanks!

Again amazing job! ^^

yeah, there's some pretty amazing art that can be done in photoshop. I always thought it wasn't too good for painting (as good as opencanvas or painter, neither of which I have) but recently, I've seen the same kind of 'painterly' results in photoshop, so I'm really inspired now to do a lot more with it.

This guy uses mostly photoshop (without reference 0_0 ) This guy inspires me so much.

american comic style? I didn't think of it as that. Though, the inspiration for this pic was from an american comic character (I think I put a link in the description)
I used to read some american comics, but don't really anymore. I was going for a kind of 'real life' Gaara.

LunaMiel In reply to dtownley1 [2005-07-18 18:52:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh, X3 I dunno. Just something about it reminded me of cover art for american comics. It was probably the colouring. But still, the piccie is awesome! I'd double fave it if I could!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dtownley1 In reply to tanuki-container [2005-07-16 05:24:18 +0000 UTC]

I just try to visualise everything first. A mate of mine, who is an absolutely brilliant artist once told me, that when he draws a scene, he imagines it as a movie, playing out in his head. When he gets to the right moment, he'll 'pause' it, and draw that. I think that's a great way of approaching it.
