This is intriguing...he kinda reminds me of a grittier version of Nightcrawler from the X-Men. It kinda makes the point that it's what's in the soul that defines who you are. That and it also shows it's a fine line that keeps us from becoming what we hate. We aren't perfect (he smokes), and sometimes the way the world is, we end up having to take regrettable actions as a result of the sin and brokenness that's already in the world before we ever showed up in the scene.
He has a lot in common with his enemies and if he lets go of the Cross that keeps him grounded, that would be all it would take.
At least, that's my personal interpretation. Others are free to see it differently!
