"This is impossible!" Dennis complained one evening, soon after the extensive maintenance had begun. "By the time I return from one delivery, I'm already late for another!"

"That's because you take so long that you make Stephen look fast." Molly muttered sleepily.

"Well have you been on time with all of your deliveries?" Murdoch grunted, which quieted the yellow engine.

"We've just got to power through the best we can." Norman sighed. "Which will mean a much harder tomorrow, Dennis."

"Well, you won't ever hear me complaining over a chance to stretch my wheels." Stepney intervened. "Better to have plenty of work to do then, well, none at all."

"I would disagree," The grey diesel growled. "I'd much appreciate a good long res-"

"That's not what I mean." Stepney hissed, his tone turning fierce. "I meant never being able to turn your wheels again. Sitting alone in a cold, dark siding, waiting for... you know what." He finished, unable to bring himself to mention Barrow Scrap Yard, where he'd been saved from scrap.

"Stepney's right," Norman sighed coldly. "We're extremely lucky to have the controller we've got. The owners on the Mainland wanted nothing more to do with us, except to use us to make better, more efficient diesels." Dennis shuddered, remembering.

"Well, that's practically how it was for me." Stepney started, and the two listened with morbid fascination as he recounted the two times he'd nearly been scrapped. When he'd finished, Norman and Dennis were silent. Neither one could put words together. "And that's why I will never complain about my workload, so long as it keeps me busy." The Bluebell engine finished, staring down at the tracks. "So long as I never have to even consider facing a fate like that. And I'm very thankful to Sir Topham Hatt for going through what he's been through to save as many steam engines as he can."

"Yes, however," Norman sighed bluntly, "he can't save every engine, much as we all wish he could."

Soon, all the engines had gone to sleep, except for Stepney. He was still relaying the conversation from before in his smokebox. There were engines in the world, even on the Mainland, who were waiting out the ultimate sentence for absurd reasons, beyond their control. It wasn't right, but what was a little Terrier like him going to do about it?
