Description
The Frijol puddlehunter is the most active and nomadic of all the dragonfly species, foraging widely in search of newts and eggs to feast upon, supplementing its diet with occasional smaller insects, such as weevils or other dragonflies. Food is eaten on the wing. Lacking a set range, it sleeps perched on vegetation for short periods before moving on again. These hyper insects have higher energy levels but shorter lifespans, although they can be seen coasting like an albatross to save energy. They commonly dip down into the water to cool themselves off. They are not found on the hilly areas, but remain in the lowlands full of ponds and pools.
Nymphs are laid in semi-large ponds containing newts for prey, but optimally absent from their breeding ponds are greenbacks. Nymphs live for about one month to a year before metamorphosis, as ponds are not guaranteed to be stable. Eggs are laid any time of year but moreso during the wet season than the dry. Females are a more dull reddish brown while males are bright strawberry red in coloration. At the onset of autumn, when breeding season occurs, males will search out females and zip around her buzzing loudly to try and attract her. Sometimes they may chase the females around instead of displaying, which has a lower mating success rate than do males which display.
