Chapter 2 Liam“Hold on, pal.” Liam said, though I would take no comfort in him. What comfort could I take when my whole world was gone? There was nothing left for me. “The Last Chance is housing survivors. Seems that the ship started taking Solans even before the planet blew.”
“Why wasn’t I informed?” I asked curiously.
“Everyone heard it,” He replied. “You just weren’t listening. I’m sorry about Krystal, I really am, but keep yourself together. Let’s just focus on getting to the ship.”
“Okay.” I said and focused on getting to the Chance. It was like a tube, but with bubbles all over the place. Near the front was the largest bubble, the bridge. This was where I would be living, I started to cry. Not in the Temple would I be, but in a ship without the outside. No gardens to go through, no fresh air carried through the sky, and no outside world. It would just be a bunch of Solans all thrown together, this was just perfect.
I flew my fighter in and looked at the others going to the Chance. They were good people, but had probably lost family and friends. There would be mourning on the ship, but some people needed to be strong to make up for the weakness; to prove that the death of Sola wasn’t the end, but a beginning. I only wished that I didn’t have to be a strong one, my position as a Priest of Elixir Foin would make it so that I had to appear strong. Priests were thought to be strong and full of grace. If only the people knew the truth, that Priests were just people going through what others were going through. It wasn’t any easier for us than other people.
As I came into the hanger, fighters cleared the way for me, giving me a good spot. The spot was the one closest to Archon’s fighter. It was said she had joined the battle, though her position made it so she had to stay on the Chance. As soon as I landed my fighter she was there. I got out of my fighter and bowed to her. “It’s an honor to meet you in person, Pilot Archon.” I said.
She nodded. “You fought well back there; it’s a tragedy that Sola was destroyed. But I am very certain that you can find a way to put us together.”
“Archon, I’m pleased that you think so highly of me, but shouldn’t you be saying this to High Priest Mizak?” I asked, wondering why she was picking me out. It was true that I was a Priest that would rise to the position of High Priest someday, but that wasn’t now. I didn’t want to bring Mizak’s glory down.
“Listen, Nuin, did Foin leave a message to us?” She asked.
“Any message would’ve gone to the High Priest.” I replied and saw Liam walking towards me. “Ask him, but I have other things to take care of.”
As I walked away I could hear her yell, “But you were his son-in-law! You were married to his daughter!”
“Archon bothering you again?” Liam asked.
“Yes, I don’t like it.” I said. “I feel she wants me and now that Krystal is gone she will really try to get me.” When he stared at me I just shook my head. “Let’s find something to drink.”
“Now you’re talking!” Liam shouted and I laughed weakly. Now that the Burning Phoenix was gone, we couldn’t spend time in there. “Pal, let’s just focus on getting a beverage. Though I doubt it’d be good for a Priest to be seen drinking heavily.”
“I won’t drink heavily.” I insisted and he laughed. “That was just one time!” I knew the past event he was referring to and I didn’t want to hear it. It was more embarrassing than actually bad.
“Yes, the ONE time you nearly burned down the pub.” Liam said and smiled. “That ONE time.” It had been funny, if not safe. After that I had cut back on my drinking, though Liam was of the opinion that I always kept an extra stash of liquor under my bed. “What was Archon really asking about?”
“If I had gotten a message from Elixir Foin.” I replied. “I’m just a Priest.”
“And pretty high ranked for one.” He replied. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Foin doesn’t have something for you. Maybe another daughter for you to look after?”
“Listen, I didn’t go after Krystal because she was Foin’s daughter!” I insisted. “I’m not that shallow.”
Liam nodded and chuckled. “But I doubt that Elixir has left you in the clear. You were the one he trusted the most.” He said. “I would think he’d leave something for you to carry on his legacy. In some fashion or another.”
I nodded. I watched other people go by, solemn faces. Some families being reunited, but most people were just looking to see someone they recognized and would never find that person. “Priest Nuin!” Someone yelled and I turned. The alien had the body of an otter, the feet of a large cat, the arms were furry and had clawed hands, and the face looked like that of an eagle. The alien was mostly yellow and was called a Flexir, a species that had found shelter on Sola and had been very loyal to the goddess Ixlir.
“What is it?” I asked, suddenly worried.
“I’m wondering where you will be staying.” He said. “I have room for two more people and am figuring it would be an honor for me to be roommates with a Priest.”
