„Hey do you have a minute?“
Sue looked up from the notes on her desk and saw Kate standing in front of her.
„Sure, what do you need?“
„You. Your help to be more precise. Well not actually your help, but…“ Kate seamed uneasy and it was clear that she didn’t feel comfortable asking Sue for help.
„My help? I thought you were working down in the lab? You need help with your computers?“
Kate sat down on a chair at Sue‘s Desk and calmed down a moment before she continued talking.
„Well, yes. I wouldn’t normally ask you, we have IT guys in our own department, but it’s friday and I‘m basically alone down there.“
„I‘ll help you of course, I don’t have anything to do here anyway.“ Sue answered and stood up.
Kate made a gesture for Sue to sit down again and explained further. „Wait till I tell you everything, this is not your everyday computer fix.“
„I like a good challenge, I feel like the only thing I’ve done this week is to reset the passwords of people who had returned from their holiday.“ Sue said with a sarcastic laugh.
„Well it’s not the task itself that’s challenging, it’s the location. The malfunctioning computer is in one of our chemical research labs.“ Kate explained nervously.
Sue started to understand why Kate was so uneasy. „So I will have to wear a hazmat suit?“
„Exactly.“ Kate nodded.
„Well, we shouldn’t lose any time.“ Sue said ecstatic and stood up.
A little confused by Sue‘d enthusiasm Kate did the same and the two walked to the elevator. While Kate used her keycard to send the lift down to the labs, she stared down onto her feet.
„You know, that this is illegal and that I am breaking a lot a health and safety laws. So I hope this stays our little secret.“
„Don‘t worry. I won’t tell anyone. Besides that, I am quiet excited to see what gear you have down there and to try it on. It’s been a while since I last wore a hazmat suit.“ Sue tried to calm her down.
„What? When did you wear a hazmat suit?“ Kate asked in shock.
„That’s a long story, a friend of mine had those to renovate her house and she offered me the opportunity to try out SCBA gear and a hazmat suit, so I did.“ Sue explained shrugging.
„I guess that makes things a bit easier, if you already know the feeling. But I‘ve never experienced someone so eager to suit up especially after their first time.“
Silence. Then the elevators door opened up and Kate lead Sue into the dressing room.
On the left side were personal lockers and a few benches and chairs like in any other dressing room. But the right side was far more interesting, Sue thought. On a wall hang several Level A hazmat suits and further in the back was a filling station and a bunch of SCBA units.
Sue didn’t even wait for Kate to say anything and grabbed a SCBA.
Kate was to baffled to say anything while Sue who already had the air tank on her back, fastend the straps and closed the belt of SCBA.
„I think you should change the department…“ Kate said as Sue was donning a Dräger FPS7000 full face respirator.
„Well, you are head of the labs here, so let’s say this is my application.“ Sue said with a grin so big, Kate couldn’t miss it, even with her covered face.
„Motivation certainly doesn’t seem to be a problem.“ said Kate as Sue handed her another SCBA unit. After she had successfully shoulderd the breathing apparatus, Kate checked hers and Sue’s gauges to make sure they had enough air in their tanks.
„Ok, if you really want to work here in the future you will have to get used to our security protocols. We have a buddy system implemented here and that means dressing up together, going in together and decontaminate together.“ Kate explained.
Sue nodded and gave Kate one of the masks and watched as she put it over her head and pulled the straps tight until the respirator sat snuggly on her face.
„You first?“ asked Sue and pointed to the hazmat suits.
„Yes, the blue one is mine.“
Sue got the blue Level A suit from the hook and helped skate getting in. After she was half dressed up, she told Sue to connect her SCBA to her mask. Sue did as told and hissing and puffing noises accompanied Kates breathing.
She loved the sound, since the moment she first heard it back at Sophias house, but held her excitement back. Instead she closed the zipper of Kates suit and inspected the result.
„Everything ok?“ Sue asked.
„Seems good, perfect score till now for you.“ Kate said and Sue could swear that she heard a trace of pleasure in Kates voice.
While Kate got another suit for Sue, Sue grabbed her regulator and connected it to her mask. A cool flow of air flushed into her mask, as she took a breath from the tank on her back. Hissing an puffing sounds echoed in the small room and Sue was so diverted that she didn’t even notice Kate who had gotten her a yellow Level A suit.
„Are you done daydreaming?“ Kate asked with a muffled voice and the cold black rubber gloves of her suit shook Sues shoulders. „Oh sorry, it’s only… I had almost forgotten how it feels.“
„You can have another round of compressed air when we are done, if you want but first let’s focus on the task at hand.“
Sue nodded and slipped her feet into the black boots that were connected to the hazmat suit, Kate had gotten her. With Kates help it didn’t take long for Sue to get fully suited up and after a last check, the two made their way to the airlock of the lab.
„Now it’s your time to shine Sue, show me that you are not only a good technician but a good hazmat technician…“
