I'm not entering ATR.
All right! Now that we have that cleared up. XD While thrashing about in the throes of art rut over the past few weeks, I decided on a lark to create some reference material for the characters I would have used if I were entering the Artists at the Ready tournament. (Seen here: )
This quickly got out of hand, and you see the result here. (And in the previous faux teaser I uploaded a bit before this.) But hey, art is art so why let it go to waste, eh?
It's a bit of a challenge creating ref sheets for characters who already have them, without sounding like you're telling simply the same information over and over again. And if you are, making it at least entertaining. Though one of these days I think I should make some sort of proper introduction for Oliver since he's never really been fully explained.
Some last minute details that didn't make it in:
Ree is from a story of the same name, no, it has not been released/published. Her song is "Ohne Zuschlag" by Din Stalker. She is a young girl possessed by hell itself and, in the ATR universe, would more than likely be mortified knowing that there are so many other characters in the 'young girl + demons' vein that she'd likely be begging me not to write a story about her.
Oliver is from no story, to clear that up once and for all. He was created for an OCT that never ended up happening. Now he is an orphaned character looking for a home with what is possibly the most frightening puppy dog expression a human being could make. (Yes, he's human.) His song is.. hell I dunno. Vindaloo? Look it up on youtube. XD
Rigg is from an old, old old storyline of mine entitled Jaoh or City of Jaoh. It never got too far along the lines, seeing as how futuristic stories aren't entirely my cup of tea, but he was a good character I enjoyed very much, and would definitely like to show more of him, his companion the Bug, and their buxom overseer, the Psycher Victoria. His song is the Hell's Laboratory theme from FF6. Haha.
Anyway. Back to work.

No, it's supposed to be 'think a think'. It's just creative liberty with his manner of speaking. Like saying 'you'll never think a thunk' or something similarly whimsical. XD

Makes me think of that journal your wrote, about giving and extra something about you as an artist and about you characters on your references sheets, besides the obvious requirements.
I like how you accomplish all of that here, while keepin' that fresh look that always makes it look a lot easier than it is.
Your drawing and painting looks really simple yet vivid. I guess that's what gets you millions of pageviews and watchers. I've always wanted to give that kind of life to the things I do without having to overcomplicate myself while painting, or whatever, so seeing this kind of things always gives me a breath of fresh air.

The characters are very, very awesome. Even though the school girl IS overdone, you give her a unique look just because of your style. I have just one question, how can your blood be 0-? XD;

Auugh I love the flexibility in the character lineart... The designs are so lovely. And it's so great to be able to read more about these characters.
Maybe I was mistaken to think Oliver was upper class - here he seems more... laddish? Particularly in his speech. I love him no less, though. ;w;

Ohh no no. Olly is about as far from upper class as you can get. He's from the American dustbowl era. Or thereabouts. Haha.
And yes, he tries waaay too hard with the circus speak than any one person should attempt.

Wow, so after I read all the comments from the teaser I came back to rummage through your work to see if the big guy was the dude you entered into SDL with the giant club littered with the weapons of defeated opponents and THIS was up. Ah well. Saved me the time.
Doesn't look like your actually entering though are you... ARE YOU? Heh. Was just thinking if that were the case I'd have to start writing now so I'd know what I was doing waaaay down the line in the slight chance that we ended up in a match.

Rigg, if you don't mind me saying, reminds me faintly of Commander Vimes from the Discworld Novels by Terry Pratchett. It's possibly why I'm so drawn to this character.

I guess in a way their personalities are similar, but I think Vimes has more of a gift for clever, sharp speech that Rigg is too blunt to employ. Nevertheless, a flattering comparison. <3

Ah well I glad. You're very right though, there are differences. I think it was the quote, "Guys got to have a job," That really stroked that comparison for me, though more of the earlier Vimes before he became the Duke and whatnot.
I was wondering, do you do all of your work straight with a template now, or do you still do some old fasioned scanning?

All of the images here were initially scanned as completed pencil arts, not like roughs finished with inking in Photoshop or anything. I hand draw everything, scan, then color in Photoshop CS.

May I ask with which kind of pencils and paper size you work?
Your lineart looks so soft and smooth, I always thought you worked with very small digital pens^^

Ahhmm.. 8 1/2 x 11 paper size, standard printer paper. With a .5mm pencil filled with whatever lead I can find. Right now it's been mostly 2B.

I'm seriously in love with these reference sheets. They're short, sweet, and to the point. They, at a glance, give you all the info you'd need to know to know the personality and abilities of the character they show. Brilliant job
