Description
I honestly like Emmerichs Version of Godzilla - it's not a movie comparable to the very first version of Godzilla, but technically there shouldn't have been any sequels anyway. No reference used ^^To all those who requested that I change the title:
No
Please understand that the movie is an american thing - a different version and much later the japanese copyright holders decided they don't like it anymore and thus they made it a different creature named "Zilla". The continuity of the series is a joke anyway, the movies are all about the creature and they don't have to make any sense at all. And that's MY opinion, please respect it, thank you!

I agree with you. This version of the beast is my favorite, its believable and looks fucking bad ass, which you clearly did a great job of illustrating! When I started to design dragons for my game system i broke from traditional (D&D) versions of the beast and used Emmerichs Godzilla as a baseline. I only wish i could make my dragon art comparable to your amazing work!
*Thumbs Up* Beat down the whining bitches

I do not know, but Toho's copyright seals on the back of their movies that feature 1998 godzilla say "Zilla", so it's pretty much official that he is called Zilla, and Zilla was only mistaken for Godzilla (it points this out in GMK). I love Zilla as a separate kaiju, and hate him as a Godzilla design, so I think I'll stick with a separate kaiju design. It'd be super cool to see Zilla appear as like a dlc in the godzilla game

Correction: Amazing monster, amazing movie when you aren't biased towards the Japanese Godzilla. It's an American imagining just like the 2014 Godzilla, not the Japanese Godzilla, for crying out loud.
It's only shitty to those who get made about it being different than the Japanese Godzilla. Get over it and accept something original that also has a better plot than any of the Toho Godzilla movies I've seen so far. For me, only Final Wars even comes slightly close to the 1998 and 2014 movies, but it's still lacking in every way except for the monster action. I watch Final Wars for that and nothing else.

That's fine with me, but I like 1998 and 2014 better due to the more well-written plots and not much else. (And slightly due to how I pretty much grew up with 1998 since I was 9 or 10.)
I have some friends on Facebook who have said that Final Wars is good as a monster movie, but the overall plot could have been more well written. (That also being a general statement about the Toho series as a whole.)
I can see where/why people like the Toho movies, but they're not my kind of movie of the ones I've watched so far. (It's not easy finding them online with English subtitles or to buy near where I live.)

I actually think he was perfect for the role. I'll admit I'm not familiar with him outside of Godzilla 1998 and The Lion King (not sure if he's in the sequels, but oh well) but I wouldn't have chosen someone else for the role.
I was disappointed at first (and still kind of am) that he didn't return for Godzilla: The Series. No one else is perfect for the role of Nick than him in my opinion. Bad actor or not, you have to admit that he was perfect for the character.

It's not only the design that is hated, it is the monster (And movie) Itself. The movie, while not amazing, wasn't bad in of itself. But the monster, while cool in its own right, just wasn't Godzilla. Tristar was only interested in the name, not the character. Why do I say this?? Because what we got did not fit the necessary criteria. The design didn't look too much like Godzilla at all. Not to mention, it lacked several of the requirements. first thing, he did not shoot his atomic breath. Some might say that that was too unrealistic, but that's a time-honored trait of the character. And they actually killed him in this movie. They shot him down! Godzilla's supposed to be an indestructible force of nature, and is able to defeat the military in his movies. Another time honored trait. Not allowing those two simple things (And radically changing the design to make it look like a Jay Leno-saurus with that giant chin) is like if you tried to make Superman realistic by changing up his costume and not allowing him to use his powers. Or if you tried to make Sonic realistic by not allowing him to run or be blue. It doesn't work. They were interested in the name to make all the money, and couldn't give a crap about Godzilla as a cinema star and character. Change isn't a bad thing, and can be refreshing. But this creature was TOO much of a deviation from the original character. The NEW 2014 American Godzilla did it right. They made him new and kickass but still respected the original. That, in my opinion, is the movie we SHOULD have gotten in 1998.

I will agree, they didn't do Godzilla justice in the '98 film, but hey, it was a good monster film regardless and I actually grew up with that one. Me personally, I find the design, especially the neck and face to be far more terrifying than the original. But I digress, the very first Godzilla did in fact die, he was killed by the oxygen destroyer. Therefore another Godzilla took his place. I see the '98 Godzilla this way, he keeps getting reincarnated, and thus will always keep coming back, possibly stronger and better each time, (remember Godzilla Junior who had atomic breath, ect?) There was going to be a sequel where the Godzilla would finally have the trademark atomic breath, fire, ect. But unfortunately it did poorly with the Godzilla fans, and creator himself, who had actually walked out of the theater. But anyway, my point is, the '98 Godzilla had offspring, copies of itself and one of them survived. So in a "way" it's like the first film from 1954 where the big guy was killed, but another Godzillan or whatever it's called mutated and took after him. I think people were more pissed at the fact that A. He wasn't as big, B. He didn't have atomic breath and other powers, C, he had offspring, (which to me wasn't a bad idea considering,) and finally D, He ran away a lot, even though he DID end up outsmarting the military and succeeded a surprise attack. The symbolism I get from both the 1954 and 98 Godzilla is that at some point a tornado has to stop, but another one will always take its place and the cycle continues. '98 Godzilla was not only symbolic of that, but of the fact that it is man's folly for all the destruction. Yes, the dialog was cheesy, and the characters for that matter, but still. It isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to seem, ESPECIALLY since he doesn't really die. His child takes the torch so to speak. It rather pisses me off that Toho turned him into a joke calling him Zilla and having his ass whipped like that by the big G. If the 98 Godzilla wanted blood, even being as weak as he was he would have his cunning and speed to back him up. People just need to realize that in that '98 film he was supposed to be the first of his kind, not the strongest. Again, like the 1954 Godzilla. That's why it baffles me how so many people can spit all over it. Truth be told, both films were symbolic...and of the same exact thing. "Oh he's weaker, not Godzilla, noooo! He no supposed to die!" I laugh at that kind of talk now, because they obviously haven't SEEN the first Godzilla film. How easy people forget, am I right?

Zilla honesly isn't bad but you know Roland emmerich's godzilla movie wasn't the first american one...
there was a previus director incharge of an american remake (who's name i forgot) that worked things out with toho studios and originally used the japanese model(only with reptile eyes and trex legs). The movie was called "Godzilla vs the gryphon"
but was scrapped because of the budget.

I like also 98's Godzilla too! I think all versions are cool on his own way. Maybe this one looks garbage or a cheap copy for the most of people and purist fans, and it was the first Godzilla movie I saw (I was 5 years old when that movie came out) and is one of my good memories. I even keep my remote control figure of it!

I like this one too. I think it's extremely rude when people say "we all wish we could forget that this one ever happened". Some of us don't wish that. It's far better than the animated ones, the ones where he does a jig, and the ones where he talks, because those ones are just stupid.
