Description
This image was created for a competition on [link] , where the objective was to turn the following concept art into a photorealistic matte painting: [link]The contest was fun and very challenging. I worked a good 50 hours on my entry and there are still many things I'd like to change but I just can't work on it anymore and time until deadline has run out anyway.
You can also find a couple of wip pictures in this thread: [link]
I don't expect to win anything, but I learned a lot during the process and now I have a cool piece in my gallery. It will also be part of my 2013 calendar.
Hope you like it!

you mean like is this a realistic scenario? I think it all depends on gravity, weather and atmosphere conditions, but my answer would be: Yes! I don't think it would ever happen on earth, but it's depicting an alien planet where these cloud layers are carved by whirlpools of wind.

I was talking about the quality. How you did that? You used a reference? What program you used?

yea there's a lot of photographic material in it to increase the detail and the realism. It's all done in photoshop basically

hehe thank you! I would have liked a few more tones, but I guess blue alone is a very popular color too.

I understand, but for me BLUE RULES! Case in point my fave character Chun-Li from StreetFighter II usually wears a Blue/Yellow Quipao,

just Photoshop, and the "optical flares" plugin from After Effects for the lens flare. The painting was done with a Wacom tablet, that's all. Thanks!

Hahaa scrolled all the way through the comment section looking for this information. Now I'm floored! I .. I can't believe you painted those clouds from the ground up. Incredible. Well done and good luck for the competition! Did you also paint the jets :3? This is what I love! Taking realism and creating something extra-ordinary! Not just repainting things you can simple take a photograph of. That's just how I feel anyway

no no, I actually used many cloud photos, too, but the user was asking for software so I didn't mention them. I used so many of them that I couldn't put them all in the description and I always used only small parts of each. But admittedly I couldn't have shown so much detail with painting alone. You have a great gallery btw.

This is so much better than the Dreamworks entry scene Seriously, one of my faves from you in a while (which I understand doesn't happen a lot, you're a variety artist kinda like me
) But it's really cool and if I knew such a contest existed I would have taken a try myself (no point though, I probably would have ended up with a near-clone of this anyway
) Sorta makes me think f a gas giant atmosphere up close (assuming it had slower winds that wouldn't rip these detailed cloud formations apart
)

wow you faved it!
I kinda like how it turned out as well, although it was really frustrating in the end. It's a little more realistic than most of my other stuff. And yea, I noticed my recent works were fairly unpopular for some reason, whereas this one is like a huge fav-explosion in my inbox. I can't keep up with the messages anymore lol. Feels good.
