This was so helpfuL! Thank You Very Much! Just One Question, if i wanted to put a background BehinD the character...what would i have to do to make it happen? Should i make the background first before i draw the character?

Sorry, meant to reply earlier but so many comments around ^_^;;
Transparency is automatical on SAI so you can draw the character, make a new layer and just drag it below the character layer and use it as background!

You can drag and move layers in both photoshop and SAI. ^^

Oh yeah i tried that, but for some reason the white is still covering it. Am i supposed to cut out the character and delete the background? If so how?

It made me feel like drawing and shading something. ^_^ I have to ask a very stupid (but sincere) question, though. I've never done this so it might be forgivable. You don't use the mouse, right? What do you use?

I use a tablet - wacom intuos 4 small to be exact.

Ah, I see, thanks ^_^. I've been wanting one, perhaps when I actually buy it I can try my hand at digital art. I'll definitely use this tutorial when that day comes.

hi,i have a question, when i export the file to the photoshop, the background is not transparent.how you make it transparent?tq

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Exarrdian In reply to kittycatstudio [2011-06-12 10:47:53 +0000 UTC]

Hi there ^^/
If your picture is single character on white background then once in Photoshop you can:
1. Click the white background with the magic wand tool, it will select the area you`ll want to remove.
2. Right-click in the image and select "Select Inverse" from the menu.
3. Go to Layer>New Layer> via Copy and you should have just the character on a new later.
4. Right-click on the layer below your new one and click Delete Layer.
5. Now you`ll have just one layer with your character on transparent background

Hope that helped!

kittycatstudio In reply to Exarrdian [2011-06-12 11:31:24 +0000 UTC]

i see..so we need to use photoshop to change it to transparent.thanks for the help!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Exarrdian In reply to kittycatstudio [2011-06-12 12:31:34 +0000 UTC]

Normally SAI will automatically have the picture with transparent background unless you make a white one but it will not show as transparent unless you save as png format. If you save as jpg it will show as white.
And you are welcome!
