Description
Ah, MapleStory. Land of snails, mushrooms, grinding and... slimes.Lots of slimes. They love to jump off ledges at unsuspecting Magicians.
Mostly enemies just rely on the time-tested method of walking into players to kill them, so slimes are a little different.
Unlike most MMORPGs - and, well, normal RPGs - slimes in MapleStory aren't the weakest things out there. In fact, they're pretty tough - most players wouldn't think about taking them on until they have their first job. Green slimes are the earliest slimes you should have the misfortune to meet, and whilst most enemies up to that point are content to run back and forth on a single platform...
...slimes can jump. That doesn't seem like much unless you know MapleStory is a 2D platformer MMO; up to that point, if there's a nearby 'safe' platform, anyone with a ranged attack can whittle down the health of even the toughest opponent, assuming they can hit it. Even without a ranged attack, players can hop in place from a conveniently-located lower platform to the side and just attack at the highest point. Eventually, everything goes down, and you're utterly safe* whilst doing it.
Slimes, being able to jump, can change what platform they're on. Most enemies notice when they're being attacked and try to walk into you. The difference is, green slimes aren't necessarily stopped by an edge. Or, in fact, by aggression; I tend to get jumped by slimes jumping from great heights whilst going after loot in Ellinia...
* Assuming an enemy doesn't spawn on the platform whilst you're doing this...
