Description
How to draw my fantasy feline species - the siderian- correctly...Based on the many mistakes I have seen in fan works and mistakes I did myself....It is also useful to draw typical cats and to learn the difference with dogs. This was a good exercise for me and I hope it will improve a lot of fanworks too.
You're allowed to draw your own siderian character, but please ALWAYS refer to me (my DA) and show me the result (I'm curious!!
Siderians are as tall as a horse (although weigh less). They look roughly like a hybrid between a tiger and Oriental cat (extreme type Siamese), with some influences of the Eurasian lynx, like the big paws.
With this video you get a good feeling about the siderian appearance www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&fea… (but keep in mind that Oriental cats have more gracile legs than cheeds).
Individual siderians vary largely in the % of tige, Oriental cat lynx represented in their anatomy, but all siderians have:
- the overall body shape, powerful frontlegs, large shoulderblades and narrow hind-legs and butt of a tiger.
- the head of either an Oriental cat, tiger or something in between (although the eyes are smaller than in cats and the head has more the pantherine 'heaviness'.
- the headlenght - shoulderheight - bodylenght proportions (but this approx. the same in Oriental cats as well) and huge paws of a Eurasian lynx (some have a slightly longer body or slightly shorter legs).
Some examples of siderians with various influences of the three felids:
*Tiger-biased
*Oriental cat-biased:
*Lynx-biased:
Siderian species and art by me!! Please don't copy and/or use it without my permission!

You're welcome ^^
And yes, that totally makes sense - you chose him for his exaggerated features to make it clearer what Cheeds should look like.
And yes, it annoys me quite a bit, to be honest, although I can see why it's easy to miss out. Plus people seem to think they're canines and draw them with canine-like anatomy.

Ha yeah I see - understandable. However I have to say that if I correlate some features of Krovendraekk with canines or felines they correlate better with canines I think. Maybe because of the long, straight legs, shape of the chest and long muzzle? But yeah for the rest do they not look like a dog at all O.o - weird if people dont take any effort to take a closer lookk...

Vannjaren In reply to FelisGlacialis [2012-04-12 15:07:25 +0000 UTC]
Exactly.
And yes, I would agree that, out of the two groups, they resemble dogs more closely, because of the straight limbs, compact narrow paws, longer neck and head etc. The chest is kind of similar, although the ribcage has a more "square" appearance than the curve of a dog's chest. Haha, I completely agree. Even the head, although long, isn't that doglike - the muzzle has a blunter end than in canines and doesn't really taper, plus the nose is a different shape, and the eyes, and the rear-directed ears, but, as seen with your Cheederians, people obviously don't look.

You are obviously really deep into this, I also mean your anatomy knowledge, eg. the reason why a shoulder blade would look too small in my drawing would be cause I do not know how to exaggerate it O.o
I bet it took you forever to learn all this O.o

after all i want refs because your b-day is coming too XD (and i've got some evil plans and ideas here ) XD
And i also wanted to ask this some time ago but, what are all the possible colors variations of the Cheederian's eyes? because so far i only saw yellow, green and blues O3o

Maybe you like these too, as source of inspiration....
[link] - Stian sketches..only the one of him a kitten is anatomically a bit incorrect, but it's really really typically him...
[link] (funny haircuts...Stian does not look amused Oo even if it fits him somehow )
[link] - Morehvan; the boyfriend of Stian's daugher...a nice guy who appeared in my head - maybe some kinda inspiration XD
[link] - Morhtian, Stians most beautiful son...
[link] and the shining white main character of the first novel...

oh fuck I forgot - All the colours common in domestic and wild cats - except for the really dark eyes you see margays. Cheeds have light eyes - the absolutely darkest colour possible is like the orange-brown eyecolour of Brittish Shorthairs. The pupil must always be visible. No unnatrual colours like purple or red. Altought I often draw the eyecolours with deeply saturated colours - like toxic green and deep blue. But it seems possible sometimes in cats. So stick to domestic cats - then you're safe .

okay great thanks! this will help a lot. I do see my weak points. it will be hard to shake them...I have a tendency I"m sure you've noticed to make all my animals with long elagent legs, and actaully I tend to give animals longer necks than they really have....I dont know if I can change that though that's just my style...and you havent seemed to mind it, but i will definatly work on not making the ankels so weak and pointed and yeah...I do that alot lol! And I do tend to draw cheeds (particulary MIneuh) with deep chests, I didn't realize how dog-like it was until a friend of mine pointed it out, so I"ve started to stop that but I always drew MIneuh/Mudstar with a deep chest because she's a runner, and I guess maybe cause in the back of my mind I am a lover of Grayhounds and Borzois but I will definatly fix that in future pictures! thanks this will help a lot!

Hehe well you've in general very good cheed-art! But yes indeed I see too much sight-hound in your drawings...for soem reason mainly in Stian while he's most the opposite of a sight-hound of all my cheeds Oo. Anyway the big difference with those dogs is that the legs are thin and all the weight is focussed on their musclular bodies...which gives them - in my opinion- a too wide, ugly ass....But for tehr est...I like sighthounds too..beautiful in their own way! but as logn as features dont appear in my cheeds XD. But anyway I think it will help ya too, to improve But yer cheed-art is already pretty good!

yep thank you very much, yeah see to me...like in the older version of the "white Devil" honestly??? I liked how his legs were a little slimmer, that's more my usuall style I just...even my humans have long slender legs and long necks. But I just idd a pictuer of Mara and Stian *well I have it outlined* and they look much more cheederian real! more power in their front legs and the flat chest and shorter nexks *though Mara's neck may still be a smidgin too long woops* it twill be cute though I promise! and thanks for always pointing this stuff out I wantto draw them correctly and represent them properly in every way so it is very important to me. thanks a bunch!

luckily that happens not often anymore since the few refs of some ehh male cheeds posted recently. Anyway yeah taht's what I see if Shiba walks infront of me smelling another dog...looks like a stick in her ass

Though I don't draw Cheedarians specifically, this was extremely helpful for me in general. I draw primarily canines and have been working on various other species. This made some very good distinctions for felines and pointed out most of the problem areas I struggle with. Thank you! Thank you so much! It's very appreciated.

looking at the wrong pictures...
I see canine anatomy >8C the wrong one shows more a canine feline hybrid then a feline hybrid
I think this will clear a lot up for people who want to draw a Cheederian ^^
and lolol "neckfur is missing, not sexy!"
volgens mij had ik ergens gelezen dat dat haar op hun schouders ook te maken heeft met een parter kiezen ?
this really temps me to draw a Cheederian once again :3 to be fair If I look at some fanart of your species I indeed see a lot of mistakes, XS ( not that I could do better...O.o) even when there are so many good references you made :3
anyways, wonderful ref^^ and the anatomy is again outstanding

Lol dankies!! Yes iid! Most people draw them too canine since canids are more or less showing a staNDARD arrg capslcock...mrgoed weer op t engels: canids have a more standard bodybuild and are therefore easier to draw then the highly specialized felines...but yesh neckfu is important for mate-choice.
I'm curious to see fanart from you toO!!

I've always thought these looked really funky and weird.
I dont really know why. O.o
I think its because they just seem... off, too thin, long and fragile looking. I get the whole Lynx base, and I can see it greatly in them, but... the body length just throws me off. xD
Please dont take this the wrong way, I think its a great species, they just look odd to me. Lol

Have you you ever seen (extreme type) Oriental cats? I can overlay a photo of my cat on the cheederian and it exactly fits fits - Oriental cats are even longer but as narrow as cheeds. Also that is measured. But yes I have to agree...most people who see an extreme Oriental cat the first time can't believe their eyes so in that way I understand your confusion.
Wait I have maybe some videos of my Oriental shorthair (and he's even robust compared to the even thinner Siameses I've seen) [link] , and an even better exemple of a very thin Oriental shorthair (more long-lined than Nintu, my cat) [link] . This one is very thin..but some even extreme siameses are rather fat and not showing the typical cheederian body.

I think their size throws me off too.
A Friend of mine has a Oriental, but he is kind of chubby, so you cant really see the thin and long body and what not.
I can see it now, still look a little weird to me. xD

FelisGlacialis In reply to ShadowStar08 [2012-03-31 14:00:17 +0000 UTC]
Hehe yes I see. Maybe it's also where your're used to. I saw my slender Oriental cat everyday and started to see that as normal (so normal that I saw my other 'normal' cat as fat ...but well he was really fat...). But I saw you have a Jack Russel Terrier, which are anatomically totally the opposite of a cheederian which may also cause some confusion??
Anyway the cheederian anatomy should be correct in the sense of 'possible in real animals' since I have overlayed the drawings with photo's of my cat and lynxes - just to check if they are not too narrow or if the paws are not too big.

Yeah, I can see where your coming from. I have a Beagle/ English Pointer mix as well and she has long legs of a pointer but she has a somewhat stocky body, she isnt over weight, she just has alot of muscle.
Maybe the more I see them the more I'll get use to them, we will have to see. =3
